12 NATO Nations Launch Conference Conference Opened On Defense Plans WASHINGTON (INS)— Military representatives of 12 NATO nations opened a three-day conference today on western defense plans with special emphasis on the effect of new weapons such as atomic cannon und guided missiles. ’ The meeting got underway behind closed doors at 9:30 a., in., when French Gen. Augistin Guillaume, chairman of the NATO military committee, delivered an address of welcome to the 40 par-. 1 ticipants. The talks are expected to center • on plans for the proposed half million man West German army and problems of supplying it. Other subjects are believed to be the violence in French North Africa and the Communist military buildup in north Viet Nam. One source said that special subject of discussion will be the effect of new weapons which are becoming available for western de- | sense. These include the atomic cannon, the “Matador” guided missile and the "Honest John” rocket. There will be another meeting of the NATO military group in Paris in about three weeks, shortly before the NATO foreign ministers’ conference. General defense plans for next year will be worked out in the Washington sessions, and finishing touches will be applied at the Paris meeting on proposals to be made before the foreign ministers.
