We have the feeling that the powers that will be in Washington are not yet quite through talking about the Dixon-Yates and Won’t be tor a long, long time. • -—o o The total vote jn Indiana for the recent election is officially announced as 1,590,000 which is considered rather good for an offyear and with no candidates for senator. ” 0 -0 We admit that temperatures in the sixties is unusual in northern Indiana for this time of the year but it's appreciated by about everyone Including the farmers who have been delayed for weeks by the rains. Thank you Mr. Weatherman. 0 0 The Chicago Cubs have sold Ralph Kiner, the home run hitter to the Cleveland Indians for an unnamed price. Ralph is thirtytwo years old and has not been too spectacular the past year or so and will have to improve to warrant the paying of a >75,000 annual salary. 0 o—— Remember the ten-horse teams that were used to draw sightseers on a tour of Ford’s museum village near Detroit? The fancy horses, much admired, burned to death Tuesday in a fire which destroyed the old barn which was built in 1863 and transferred to Greenfield Village in 1943. The Indianapolis city council is in favor of eastern time but not until next April when they will go on daylight saving time the year around. Other towns and cities ■will follow them. We <|on’t see the advantage of waiting unless it’s to give the legislature a chance to place-the entire state in line. r ’,■■■ .... . <. —o ' Courtney Johnson oP South Bend, chairman of the state tax study commission is proposing a surtax of 25% on gross income tax to be similar to the recent Indiana veteran bonus surtax. As bad as the cities need assistance many feel that the proposal is unfair to the business men of the state and that some plan can be found that will place the burden on all the tax payers. Nor do we like the proposed transfer of money from the state fund.
Planning a Kitchen For Cardiac Patients
By HERMAN N. BUNDESEN, MJ. WHILE heart disease is more prevalent In men, women sre frequent victims as well. It Is Important that they also follow most of the recommendations I have laid out for heart pa* tlents in the three previous col* unins devoted to this topic. Helping the Housewife In addition, there is much that can be done around the home, particularly in the kitchen, to make their lives easier. For the last few yean, Chicago’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital has maintained a **cardlao kitchen,” designed to alleviate kitchen work as much as possible for the heart disease victim. Tours of the kitchen can be arranged for large groups by telephoning the hospital administrator for an appointment Your kitchen can be made to help you, too. For example, shelves should be no higher than six and one-half feet from the floor. Unless you’re a real “shorty," you shouldn't have to do much stretching to reach that. — - - * Convenient Arrangement Items most frequently used should be lined along the front edge of the shelf so you don’t have to stand on tiptoe to get them.
Dishes and other eating and cooking utensils should be located near the center of the kitchen, or wherever you do the most work. I would advise you to place a long-legged posture chair in front of the sink, so you can sit while preparing food or washing dishes. A hlghfhalr with the trsj and
Home builders are cautioned to familiarise themselves with the Decatur toning ordinance before starting construction of a new home. There are certain protective restrictions concerning the placing of a building on a lot People who plan to build are advised to get a building permit from Ralph E. Roop, city engineer and soning officer. Mr. Roop’S office will advise the applicants if their plans are within the ordi- e nance. Taking a few minutes to get a building permit, may save the builder many dollars later. / _ —o Several small “colleges joined recently in Fort Wayne in entertaining wealthy business executives of Indiana. The principal purpose of the meeting, when the celery and chicken bones were removed from the banquet table was to induce the guests to make tax-free contributions to the small colleges. Presidents of some private colleges have been crying about the needs of their schools for years. It is interesting to note that almost always when a small college .receives a goodly sum from an Individual, the first improvement is an extravagant home for the president of the college. Maybe that is needed for better education, too. o—-00 —-0 Highway courtesy is one of the first essentials of safe driving. We can get a lesson in courtesy from a big majority of truck drivers who operate trucks for commercial lines. On the whole, these men who travel thousands of miles a year and haul millions of dollsrsworth of merchandise display wonderful road manners. Tourists, by and large, are less polite, and often the tired driver fails to dim his lights or give way to faster vehicles. Local drivers in Decatur however, appear to be by far the w’orst traffic offenders. They should know the stop streets and speed limits better than visitors but a day never goes by that a casual observer cannot see many violations on the local streets. Driving courtesy pays big dividends in fewer fatali tics. an<J costly.jni shaps._. __ ....
arms removed would do almost as well. I think a rocking chair might come in handy, also. It would permit you to relax while planning your work. If your husband doesn’t help dry the dishes, don’t worry. This is one job you can avoid completely. Just rinse the dishes with boiling Water and let them drain dry. Believe me, it’s more sanitary than drying them with a dish towel. The smaller the kitchen, the better for a heart patient. An ideal working radius is about 20 inches. Top Oven Advisable The right kitchen equipment can also be a big help. A top oven (they’re becoming popular again, you know) will eliminate stooping. And refrigerators come with both left- and right-hand doors. One might save you more work than the other in your kitchen. Tomorrow, I’ll tell you how what you prepare in the kitchen may help you live happily with, heart disease. QUESTION AND AMSWU L. C.: I have been advised that the pores of the skin cannot absorb anything. Is this true? Would hormones be absorbed through the skin? > Answer: There are various substances which may be absorbed through the skin, particularly substances dissolved in fatty preparations. Hormones can be absorbed through the skin. It ir therefore advisable that such preparations be used only unde: the direction <X your doctor.

Depict Story 01 America’s Growth .Story Is Depicted * By Historical Dolls Small hand-made historical dolls depicted the story of America’s discovery, settlement and growth told of Mrs, Hebert Storck of Fort Wayne to students of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades in the Decatur public library Tuesday and Wednesday. Children who completed the summer reading program under Miss Bertha Heller, librarian, were invited to the library to hear Mrs. Storck’s vivid description of America’s history. The dolls which she made herself are small replicas of figures prominent in American history from the Indians to Janies Whitcomb Riley, the Hoosier poet. c Mrs. Storck has made almost 200 of these dolls only a few of which were displayed here. She began her hobby for her two sons when they were small and has continued it for the benefit of other chll dren. Following American history chronologically, she showed Decatur boys and girls figures of the Indians of various tribes, of the Pilgrims who settled in this country, of Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson who signed the Declaration of Indepehdence and of George Washington. Other figures on display were of Betsy Ross who sewed- the first
Hag, Abraham Lincoln and his wife and mother, Frances“Slohum who was a white girl raised by Indians, of General Anthony Wayne who was prominent in Indiana history, of Father John Marquette who explored the Mississippi and of the Franciscan priests who established the mission schools of California. c The” small figures which stand almost six Inches high follow historical detail accurately. The tiny faces are reproductions- of familiar pictures of the men and women portrayed. Mrs, Storck's hobby to which she devotes much time has helped many youngsters to whom history is dry and uninteresting. The little figures help the children to visualise the story of America.
