comfortable and peaceful place. It’s the elevators. They're a menace. A Madrid elevator embodies the Spaniard's disdain of machinery. It aeema to be designed not to work. It is practically guaranteed to make sudden, unscheduled descents. a» In'the Bdificio Espana and the Air Ministry, both brand new buildings with batteries of modern elevators, Americans here on base construction and military aid missions are finding out about
Question Box By Scientists of ths G. E. Co. Q: How van I figure the weight of coal in my coal bin? A: Roughly, for home sixes, you can figure the average density of a pile of coal at about 35 cubic feet per ton. Thus, if you get the top of your pile in the bin as level as possible, then measure the height, width and depth in feet, and multiply these together, you will have the volume in cubic feet. Dividing this figure by 35 will give the approximate weight in tons. Q. Do earthquakes make any noise? 'A. Yes. In addition to the sounds that may be produced as buildings and other structures are demolished by a severe earthquake, there may be other sounds, even in a region where there are no buildings. Most common is a low and heavy rumbling noise, a deep booming or low' moaning, a roaring or a crushing grinding noise Others have been described like a roaring wind, or a chimney on fire. The sound of an earthquake is generally very deep, almost too low in pitch to be heard at all. f Q. Do tides occur in inland lakes? A. Yes, but they are quite small, smaller than variations caused by wind and weather. At Chicago, for example, the range between high and low tide in Lake Michigan is less than two inches. Q. How can one get rid of algae in an outdoor pool? A. The algae are a widely-spread group of plants, which includes most of the seaweeds as well as many fresh water varieties some that do not grow in water. They are present in practically all surface water, and may become a nuisance if the temperature is above about 60 F. the water is in sunlight and contains dissolved nutrients for the plants. Copper sulfate (“blue vitriol") may be used to eliminate them. This should be used at the rate of from .5 to 1.0 parts per million of weight. In a'’pool that contained a thousand gallons of water, this would be about a tenth -of an ounce of the chemical. elevators. Air Tense So far there have been, no casualties — among Americans — but the air is tense. In one of a number of sudden drops at the-Air Ministry a man's leg was broken. There have been two falls at the 28-story Edificio Espana without casualties, but a messenger attempting the New York aupway trick to stop a slicing door wdnt to the hospital with severe leg injuries. Getting trapped between floors for long stretches is all in a day's work. Waiting for ten minutes for an elevator is not unusual. One American working on the 11th floor of the Edificio Espana has quit riding the elevators. He always walks, even though his .work takes him to the 3rd floor several times a day. An unusual feature of Madrid elevators is that the older models are designed to take passengers in only one direction up. you send the elevator back downstairs and. there la no way of calling it back. The signs which say "Descending Forbidden” mean business. Old elevators are just not designed to''carry a load down gently. The system of calls is also unusual. Instead of "up" and "down" buttons, there’s just one button and that means down as far as the elevator boy is concerned. Where . there are batteries of elevators, each elevator has an independent call button. The man in a hurry presses all the buttons and so do other people on other floors. No elevator appears for five minutes. Suddenly, all the elevators arrive at once. The elevators get no help from Madrid’s sporadic electricity supply.
