A slick prowler threw a stone through the window of Chester's fur store in Fort Wayne and escaped with a SSOO mink coat. That's one way to get ready for winter but we don’t advise the ladles to practice it. 0 0 This is a fast moving world. We have homes with automatic heat; air conditioning; push button kitchens; electric razors and countless other conveniences but through the century no one has come up with an improvement on the tooth-brush. 0 0 The Democrats will have only 37 members in the house to 63 Republicans but that ought to be enough to make some noise when they get in earnest. It's a gain of eighteen over two years ago. The senate is some worse, 35 to 14. a Democratic gain of four. * 0 0 With the addition of air conditioners, television sets and new kitchen appliances to homes, it would be a good time for the home-owner to have his wiring system completely checked by a competent electrician. A five dollar inspection fee might save a five thousand dollar fire. 0 0 The Lincoln school parentteachers association meeting Thursday night will be turned over to Superintendent W. Guy Brown for his annual report to the group on'“the state of the school.” Superintendent Brown will have an interesting report on the present and future of the public scbpoj Decatur and every school patron should attend the meeting. q 0 Liquor enough to make more than 100,000 cocktails was poured down the sewers at Providence, Rhode Island recently. It was the bottled liquor which got caught in the hurricane Carol last August. It was condemned by the health and tax agents and ordered destroyed, probably over the protests of hundreds of thirsty people who would have been glad to have made a real test of the “stuff.”
Symptoms That Point To a Heart Condition
By HUMAN N. BUNOESEN, M.D. NO one ever died euddenly from heart disease. It takes a long time, possibly yean, to damage the heart or coronary arteries extensivelp. Most of the time your body gives you ample warning that something is wrong. When you disregard these signals, you invite trouble. Many persons who shrug off pains as merely indigestion or pleurisy, wind up in the cemetery long before they should. How can you recognize heart tisease? What are the symptoms? These are some of them: The most severe condition is tailed myocardial Infarction. It results when a blood clot forms In one of the branches of the coronary arteries, usually caused by hardening of the arteries. The most common symptom is severe squeezing, pressing or constricting sensation near the breast bone. You may also be short of breath, sick to your stomach, vomit and hiccup. You are very weak, your pulse is weak and rapid and your skin is pale and moist. Angina Pactoris Somewhat less severe is angina pectoris, a condition also caused by a disturbance to the heart muscles blood supply. You will f<el pain under the breast bone. It may pass upward into the neck or shoulder, or stomach. It's like a feeling of oppression or a vise-like sensation. Other symptoms you may have are rapid beating of the heart, faintness and dimness and short-
We join with millions of people over the country and in foreign lands toV express our sorrow because of the death of Lionel Barrymore, whose acting on stage, screen and radio had brought joy to almost every home in the world. He was 76 years old and died after a long illness with arthritis. He had thrilled many audiences and was acknowledged to be a real actor. Allen county G.O.P. chairman Lloyd Hartsler is said to be slated for a $7,500 a year job as an attorney for the Indiana toll road commission. Most employes of this allegedly independent commission appear to be party hasbeens. whom Toll Road Georgia evidently feels should be pacified after being slapped. It will be interesting to watch for the figures showing the cost per mile of this east-west highway. Perhaps it should be named Craig's Gravy Valley. 0 0 The Lively murder trial is on at Indianapolis. You will remember he is the Texan charged with the murder of Dorothy Poore, the 18-year-old girl from Clinton, who was enticed into the room at a downtown hotel on promise of a job. She was choked to death and then her body cut up and placed in a dresser drawer where it was found a couple of days later. Lively was captured and made two confessions which he now denies. From the little we have heard, it ought not take too long to hear the evidence and come to a conclusion. 0 0 Severin Schurger. Decatur attorney. lost his quest for the northern district appellate court post in the recent election by 40,000 votes which in a state-wide election is considered a mere handful. This city's personable candidate ran 20.000 votes ahead of some of the other candidates, which is some consolation. Adams county folks supported the candidate well and gave him a strong vote of confidence. In defeat, Schurger has become known throughout' the state and he has .acquired hundreds of new friends in every county of Indiana.
ness of breath. The typical seizure lasts only a few minutes and la usually brought on by severe exercise, emotional strain, overeating or severe anemia. Nine out of ten persons suffering coronary artery diseases are between 50 and 70. About two per cent are under 30. Irritable Heart Irritable heart, however, rarely occurs In persons under 20 or over 40. You are more likely to develop this condition if you are tall and slender. This is a disorder caused by nervous upset. It is brought on by worry, acute illness or prolonged convalescence. Symptoms are flushing, trembling, faintness or rapid breathing. Your hands and feet are likely to be cold, too. You will sigh frequently, and appear to be short of breath. Rarely is there pain under the breast bone, but you have a dull aching sensation near the heart, x Rheumatic fever causes ninetenths of all child heart disease. It la almost always precipitated by a streptococcus sore throat. If you notice any of these symptoms, send for the doctor Immediately. But don’t worry. With proper care, you'll probably live a long time. QUESTION AND ANSWEB H. J.: I have a small sore, like a pimple, on the back of my scalp. What causes this, and what can be done for it? CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
“ARE YOU going to register again?" Cynthia asked after Nora had told of her patient's death. She had fixed coffee and a lettuce and tomato sandwich, which she now put down before the other nurse.’ "No, X don’t think so. 1 think I’ll just stay home—until Alan gets here.” At mention of her sweetheart's name, Nora's small, piquant face lighted up so that it was not plain at all but beautiful. “Well, you can do with a rest.” "Not only that/ Nora returned, "but it will give me a chance to do some shopping.” “Trduaseau?" Cynthia teased. She poured herself another cup of coffee and sat down opposite Nora. She had had a busy morning, showing Miss Whiting about the clinic. And having been out late last night, she was ready to relax and take things easy, too. It had been a pleasant evening. She and Norman had driven to 9 little roadside place where they had danced to their heart’s content. Norman had proved a good partner. Cynthia had not danced in so tong shewas afraid at first she would be awkward and find it difficult to follow nis lead. But even the new steps had been managed without too much effort. "Yes,” Nora said, her face lighting up again. "Alan wants to be married almost as soon as he gets here." "I should think so! You two have waited tong enough." And there could be no doubt as to their love, Cynthia thought, with a small pang of envy. They had known each other so tong, grown up together, shared the same things, never thought there might be anyone else for either one. It seemed to her that that was the way love should be. Not a thunderbolt, as Norman claimed. "It tiaa been a tong while,” Nora sighed. “But I’d wait all my life for Alan if I had to." Well, that might be all right for some people, Cynthia thought, but did she want to wait a lifetime to try to wake Walt up—to 'be old and gray, as she had said to him. She wanted to build a marriage, a home; she wanted to have children of her own, not spend all her life taking care of other people’s. “I’ll go shopping with you,” she said. “I just aidore looking at lovely things, even when I can’t afford to buy them." “Don’t you have to work?" "I stopped today.’’ Then, at the other nurse's astounded expression, Cynthia* laughed and added, •’l’m on vacation. It seems' that Dr. Btllars thinks I need a rest, and a change, too.” “Well, it all works out beautifully.” Nora was pleased. She had not caught the slight suggestion ol irony m CynUua'a lul remark.

Not being given to irony herself,: Nora did not look for hidden meanings in what others said. "I'd love, to have you shop with me. I never can make up my mind. It will be such a help to have you along. You always use such good taste, and you know what prices should be. Not that I intend to buy much. But I do want a few very nice things." "Os course you do. Every woman wants nice things when she's being married. We'D have loads of fun, Nora." And that would take care of part of her vacation time, Cynthia thought, a bit grimly. For she really had ho idea as to how she would fill all of it. She knew that after a few days of rest she would start to get restless. When you were used to being busy, one of the hardest tilings to do was to be idle. She had not told Norman that she was going to take a prescribed vacation. She would not have known how to explain it to him. for one thing. She preferred to have him believe her days were full; he might keep calling her, or dropping in unexpectedly. She wanted to go slowly and carefully with Norman. She had no desire to be swept off her feet. Marriage was too Important for that. She caught some of its contagion during those next few shopping days with Nora. It was exciting, shopping for a trousseau, even though it was not to be an elaborate one: choosing lovely underthings, extravagantly trimmed with lace, an enchanting housecoat of pale blue satin with a wide gold belt and matching slippers; a golng-away suit, although Nora thought Alan would have been away so long he would want to stay at home; ail the matching accessories. < “And one evening gown," Nora decided, after most of the. more practical purchases had been made. “Thdugh 1 don’t know that I'll ever have a chance to wear it. Alan writes that all he looks forward to is sitting, with me in front of his own fireplace.’*. "Sounds like an old married man already," Cynthia teased. She knew that whatever Alan wanted would suit Nora. They were going to live in his family's house, for a while. This small Virginia town had been Nora’s and Alan’s birthplace. His family would welcome Alan s bride. Their old-fashioned home was large enough to make room for the young couple. Later on, Nora thought that she and Alan might build their own place on the same eight acres of land. Nora laughed. “Well. 1 don’t iecl like an old married woman. You know, Cyn, Alan's been away so long, and living such a different kind ol life, that at lunes 1 won-

Yes, if done in the right way —by putting a small piece of bread down on the gravy, and then eating it with the fork as though it were any other helping on your plate. Q. If a close friend of bereaved family attends the funeral, is it necessary that she wear black clothes? A, No; any subduel shade of clothes is suitable. Just avoid anything gay or of a frivolous nature in your attire. Q. What is the proper way to cut a three-tiered wedding cake? A. Usually, the projecting bottom tier is cut first.
der if he may not seem like a strangei to me when he comes home. It frightens me, Cyn.” "Every bride is Jittery,” Cynthia assured her. "As soon as you see Alan, you’ll know he’s no stranger. Then you won’t be afraid of anything.” “I wish I were more tike you, or Roz. Can you imagine Roz being airaid of anyone or anything?" They both smiled at this. Roz had started going out practically every evening again. At desist a half-dozen men had taken Norman's place already. It was doubtful if Roz would ever really want to settle down to any one man and the dull routine of cooking his meals and irbning his shirts. Yet maybe that was only a cover-up, Cynthia sometimes thought, when she found Roz's gaiety, her glamor act, and her would-be sophisticated approach overdone. For surely every woman wc.nted, more than anything else, a man she could love and cherish, and who would protect and love her in return. Cynthia wondered if Walt missed her at all. She also wondered, and worried, about the clinic. How was Miss Whiting getting along ? She was a good soul, but would she understand the children and would they take to her? Cynthia worried about Nancy O'Riley, who had rheumatic fever and was so very delicate. She worried about the Thompson boy, who had such a severe case of osteomyelitis. She worried about all the children handicapped as a result of polio; some who still could not walk except with the aid of braces and crutches; others whose hands and arms nad lost their usefulness and who had to be painstakingly taught how to manipulate appliances, to hold a book, write or type with a few fingers of one hand, do various kinds of craftwork, and even how to teed themselves. Then there were, the children Who had been affected from birth with spastic contractions, hypertension of muscles that caused their movements to be stiff and grotesque. Sometimes they had what an unknowing observer would call "fits," rhythmic contortions that made them stumble and fall, twist and turn; or such spasms began in the face and throat, so that people who did not understand thought they were halfwitted. . - Oli, they all just about broke her heart al limes! She loved every one of them. They were normal children, capable of learning and growing, of loving and living. Yet they had to be set apart; they could not share in normal activities, playtime and schoolmates, the foolish, wonderful age of adolescence. (To Be ConluiucdJ jCHi

Post Office Aids In Fixing Addresses The Decatur post office, and all other post offices in the county, are cooperating with the bureau of the census in determining the exact location of all businesses in the United States, it was reported here this morning. The purpose of the survey is to determine whether or not the businesses are within the actual city or town limits, or within the County. Correct addresses will then be sent back to the bureau. This poses many problems, postmaster Leo Kirsch pointed out. For example, the street address of the General Electric company here was unknown, because the company has
