Detroit Lions Boost Lead In West Division NEW YORK (INS) — The convincing Detroit Lions and thesurprising New York Giants appeared today to be headed for a December meeting for the championship of the National Football league. The Lions, gunning for an unprecedented third straight world title, took a commanding grip on first place in the western division Sunday when they humiliated the San Francisco 49ers. 48 to 7, before a record Briggs stadium crowd of 58,431.
