Many Farm Ponds Built In Indiana Ponds Are Valuable For Storing Water Hoosier farmers have constructed 3,702 farm ponds In cooperation with soil conservation technicians since 1939, C. E. Swain, state conservationist of the soil conservation service said today. Adams county, which recently adopted the soil conservation district plan, has a good start towards erosion control, water supply. and fire protection, as many of the farmers either have built ponds, or are now building them. Among those completed in the past year are those of Paul Shoemaker. in Wabash township, Robert Carr, in Root township, L. Luther Yager in French township, Gerald Edwards in Blue Creek township, and L. A. Mann in Wabash township. Between six and .12 are planned for, next year, Cletus Gillman, county SCS planner, said. The new ponds In Indiana now hold nearly 10 billion gallons of water for use by livestock, enough to supply the city of Indianapolis for 3% months. Farmers have |l,110,600 invested in the 3,000 ponds, which furnish valuable refuge for wildlife, in addition to farm needs. Interest in storing water in farm ponds is still increasing, as indicated by the fact that 431 Indiana farmers built ponds during the first six months of this year. 265 more than in the first six months of 1953. It takes more than just an earth dam to make a good pond, and this is a good reason for consulting with a SCS expert before building one. Gillman points out. The SCS will help the farmer select the best place on his farm for the pond, survey the area of the pond, and supervise its construction. > Giilmau points out that it is necessary to be very careful when locating a pond, as it is costly and useless to build a dam where the soil will not hold the water, or where eroding cropland would fill the pond with mud. Too large a watershed would mean the dam could not bold all the water, while too small a watershed would not collect enough water for the farm. Two important features of a good pond. Gillman states, include an outlet for emptying excess water safely around or through the dam, and the pipe and filter sys-

Gillinan added. An interesting twist to this has been used by Luther Yager, who has fenced in an area of his pond .with runways from his three fields where he keeps beef cattle and sheep. Then, to keep the stock from muddying the water. Yager has added crushed stone to tha bottom of the pond in the area where there will he stock. The pond, which was built during a joint extension service-SCB deinonstration earlier this summer, is now filling with water. At present prices for earth-mov-ing equipment and materials, an average pond costs about 1350. not counting the farmer's own labor to build the fence and lay the pipe and the cost of a water tank. During the drought period of ; 1953 and 1954, many southern InI diana farmers paid out more | money each year houling ■water ! to livestock than it would have I cost to build a good farm pond, : SCS technicians in that area rei ported. Water stored in ponds would otherwise be wasted, Gillman said, f a'rtd“7buTd™caure' Wmage"' through I floods and sediment deposit tn ditches. Now. with ponds built to fit the needs of the farm, farmers can save water from fall and winter rainb and their ponds should l>e filled to capacity by spring.
