Cleveland And Giants Tangle
In Pro Feature
NEW YORK (INS) — One of sportsdom’s highest riddles will be solved Sunday when the New York Giants invade Cleveland for the pro football game of the week. Are the Giants as good as they have looked against weak teams and the Browns as poor as they have seemed against contenders? Forget the standings, which show - the Giants in a first-place tie with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh at 4-1 and the defending Eastern Conference champions in fourth place at 2-2. Cleveland has lost only to topranking Pittsburgh and the Eagles while New York has beaten only the cellar twins,! Washington and the Chicago Cardinals, twice each. Giant scout Jack Lavelle contends the Browns may not be able to win the title again but they surely will be strong enough to decide who does win by which of the leaders they beat'. The Giants could suffer most if the Browns bounce back since they have two games remaining with the Ohioans. The Giants appear to have a more varied attack alonfc With an Adequate defense. Chuck Conerly has had several hot days passing against the Browns ahd the Browns may be in red! trouble if injured defense backs Ken Gorgal and Don Paul aren't in the lineup. The Browns have lost plenty of offense and defense With departing personnel. But rookie Maurice Bassett- is proving to be a real ground threat and Otto Graham still has his pass patterns working with Dante Lavelli, Darrell Brewster, Dub Jones ahd Ray Rehfro. The. Eagles will not be at full strength for tonight’s game with visiting Green Bay and the Packers capitalize on weaknesses. End Bobby Walston, the league's leading scorer (71), is out three weeks with a broken jaw ‘suffered. In last week’s initial Eagles toes against Pittsburgh.. And halfback Don Johnson, kirk return flash, is out with a torn, knee ligament. Tn addition, pass-catching leader Pete Pihos is having trouble with his ankle. Pittsburgh hopes to break the log Jam in first place by Waltzing through the hapless Cardinals at Chicago Sunday. Last place Washington and the Redskins' Western Conference counterpart collide at Washington with the Colts slightly favored. The San Francisco 49'ers. last unbeaten team in the National Football League. is expected to I preserve its first-place standing i against a rugged band of Bears from Chicago. . The defending world titlists, the Detroit Lions, have their work cut out for them at Los Angeles in another top game. ZoHner PistOfts Open Season This Evening FORT WAYNE. Ind. (INS) — Indiana's only professional basketball team, the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, open their National Basketball Association season tonight at Milwaukee.
