jCreameclQl I Comments I on LbeagogJ|gsa Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Splendor of SelfControl, Proverbs 14; 15:1-5; 16; 20; 23:20-35, for Sunday, November 7. This is the quarterly temperance lesson based on self control. Man 14 endowed with those mental faculties whereby he may make decisions such as not seen in any other creatures. But in this freedom of choice, there needs to be exercised to its full self-control, else man will sink to the level of the lower animals, following the physical and mental urges that take him out of the realm of self-control Among the many conditions calling for self-control that of drinking alcoholic beverages stands out prominently. V. 29. “He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding; but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.” In this verse there is the call for self-control over our emotions. The policy of saying what you think is wrong because this policy would ignore self-control. 5J.1. “A soft answer turneth away wrath; but grlevlous words •stir up afiger." Here is seen the result in the failure to exercise self-control; there Is a going from bad to worse without self-control, A man at his best will speak kindly of every one; if that cah not be done, the will say nothing; by so doing he will have a soft answer. V. 2. “The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright; but the mouth of fools poureth oht foolishness.” A Wise man dispenses helpful knowledge to others; on the other hand, the one who misuses knowledge is foolish and his foolishness is apparent to all. V. 3. "The eyes of the Lord are in every place beholding the evil and the good." Self-control Is motivated by the right attitude toward God. When one cultivates God’s omniscience he expediences a Spiritual force adding to the right urge to live right. V.32.' “He that Is elow to a'nger is betted than the mighty; and that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city." Here is given another result 6? self-control. Returning good for evil makes an overcomer. Greater than the power of an armY Is the power of self-con-trolled men who always control their spirit. To exercise love in-
Wi t Zda I I Wisdom y j A minister' returning from his vacation first called on the Sunday School in session. The superintendent, who wanted to do the honors of a welcome, without thinking, had the school sing: Ring the bells of heaven! There is joy today For a soul returning from the wild. Ring the belts of heaven! there is a joy today For the wanderer how is reconciled. Yes, a sohl is rescued from his sinful way And is borne anew a ransomed child. Faith is the key that unlocks the cabinet of God's treasures. — Stephens.

stead of hate works, oat programs for peace and proßpdtlty. V.l. “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” The evil of strong drink is an old age problem and the wise man could not bypass this evil. Evil effects are so evident that to become an addict happens to those who will not exercise self-control in refusing the first drink. The great evil in drinking is that the drinker loses his self-control. Temperate drinking is a great moral risk. V 5.29, 30. “Who hath tf'oe? who hath sorrow: who hath babling? Who hath words without a cause? They that tarry long at wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.” Let the reader see many cases described by these verses. The cause is seen in the habitual drinker. Here are facts. What are you and I going to do about it? v. 31. “Look not thou upon the wine when it is red; when’it giveth its color in its cup; when it moveth itself aright.’’ The temptation to drink is alluring — the drihk iscolored and made flashing; some think that even the taste of strong drink is good; the flYst drink does not taste good; here is a case of a' lack of self-control and tire drinker is In dahger of turning himself into a beast. V 5.22, 23. "At last it biteth like a serpent; and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women and thine heart shall utter perverse things." Here is a further description of the drinker who has lost self-control. The truths here may be verified by one’s own observation of the evil effects of liquor physically, socially and religiously. Silly talking marks the drunkard. Why be silly? V 34. "Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea. or he that lieth on top of the mast.”' The drinking man makes hia case hopeless as far as saving himself by his own strength is concerned. V. 35. “They have stricken the, shalt thou say. and I was not sick: they have beaten me and I felt it not; When shall I awake? I will seek it again.” Insensibility marks the drinking man. Finally, he has so perfectly lost self-control that he is ever going down deeper, being overpowered by the habit Such are to be pitied and prayed for, since we know that only the transformation of character Is the cure. —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education. CLERICUS SAYS: Clerkus says: “Temperance or self-control is away of life. Intemperance of any kind affects the whole life and endangers it. God wants his children to grow in selfcontrol and he will help those who sincerely seek his help. But man must do his part and when he has done ail he can then God steps in to transform his life and empower him to go straight."
