ter an exhaustive probe revealed that charges brought against him by, Swlatlo in 1949 were “baseless.” The "Field case” began in May, 1949, when Noel, a former state department aide, boarded a plane in Geneva for Prague. It was the last time he was seen by anybody in the western world. Four days later his sister, Elsie, received a letter in which Noel said he had arrived in Prague and was searching for an apartment. He vanished that same afternoon. His sister received a message saying he had gone to Budapest, but the signature apparently was forged. In August, 1949, Hermann went to Warsaw to search for his brother. He- had planned to fly from Warsaw to Prague, but instead he vanished. On the same afternoon, Mrs. Herta Field, who was to have met Hermann in Prague, disappeared in the Czech capital. On Sept. 11, 1950, Noel's adopted daughter went to Berlin in the hope of finding some trace of her missing relatives. She crossed into the Soviet sector of the city and vanished. NEW SHEPPARD (Continued from Page One) “We are honored by the presence of Mr. Bob Considine. We welcome him to this city . . . ” He then launched anew his charges that the press has been “exceedingly damaging" to our position. ’ . t Mahcn pointed out that the defense has been getting its side into the papers also and cited a story which reported Dr. Stephen Sheppard — Dr. Sam's brother — as saying the prosecution had offered a deal to the defendant if he pleaded guilty. “This story is completely without foundation,” roared Mahon, who is demanding the death penalty for the young eociety doctor. Earlier, two tentative jurors and the judge disclosed they had received crank letters from an exconvict who claimed he was “unjustly convicted” in the same gloomy, 26 by 42 foot courtroom.
