Highest Honor Is Bestowed On Eden Anthony Eden Made Knight Os Garter .......LOND.QN. eign secretary Anthony Eden was created a Knight of the Garter today making him a member of Britain’s oldest and highest order of chivalry. • The honor was conferred on the 57-year-old veteran diplomat by Queen Elizabeth today at an audience In Buckingham palace. The order is given to statesmen and foreign rulers, and is the highest personal accolade a British monarch can bestow’. 1 Elizabeth’s action was seen as finally destroying the whispering campaign that the Queen never would permit a divorced person to be her premier. Eden’s’ first marriage was dissolved after 27 years in 1950. Two years later he married Clarissa Spencer-Churchill, niece of his political mentor and friend, prime minister Sir Winston Churchill. The elevation of the distinguished, greying foreign secretary to the Most Noble Order of the Garter, founded in 1348, came shortly before he flew to Paris for the series of conferences on German rearmament being held there this week. From now on, the conservative party statesman and deputy prime minister will be known as Sir Anthony Eden. In a brief statement, Buckingham palace said: “The Queen received and right honorable Anthony Eden, secretary of state for foreign affairs, in an audience this morning before he left for Paris. “During the audience her majesty conferred upon him the honor of knighthood and invested him with the insignja of knight companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter."
