Port Os London Is Hard Hit By Strike Port Paralyzed By Widespread Strikes LONDON tlNS)—British prime minister Sir Winston Churchill called a special cabinet meeting today—the third this week—to discuss the widespread strikes which have paralyzed the port of London. The government is believed to be preparing to send troops onto the strike-bound docks early next week to handle perishable cargoes of meat, eggs and other foodstuffs which waterfront workers have refused to unload. V Meanwhile, a spreading walkout on London's bus lines became more serious by the hour as more and more drivers and conductors left their jobs. Tlie employment of soldiers on the docks was seen as a logical outgrowth of the British government’s warning Friday night that a continuation of the widespread wildcat strikes in the port of Lon don could endanger "the economic life of the nation." „ Despite this warning the Uniqn of Thames Watermen, Lightermen and Bargemen announced that its 4,500 members will leave their jobs Sunday. Workers at ten additional bus depots joined the walkout during the night, halting service by nearly half of London's eight thousand buses and bringing the number of striking drivers and conductors to 20,320. The strike of bargemen not only will paralyze all Thames river shipping, but also will halt the disposal of London’s garbage and refuse. The dock strike alone baa caused an estimated loss of S3OO million up to today, including the reduction of Imports 'by $l5O million and exports by S9O million. The only trouble with a sure thing is the uncertainty.—Courier, Waterloo, la.
