hotel. .> ~ A national union government would be a coalition government with as wide a base as possible, but excluding the Communists. De Gaulle was understood to have put forward conditions which reportedly included the demand that Mendes-France auport another foupr-power conference on Germany before the national assembly was called upon to ratify the London accords on West German rearment. The impression prevailed in some Gaullist quarters that the premier was not opposed to such a big four meeting, but was fearful of the allied reaction if be took the initiative. Te was said to prefer that he
‘‘have his hand forced.” Mendes-France talked with the general privately Wednesday reportedly at the Matter’s invitation. The premier served as a filer for the Free French air force and later served as finance minister in the wartime cabinets set up by De Gaulle in Africa. For this reason, the premier was thought to have a slightly better chance than his predecessors in wooing the general. De Gaulle has not supported any governments since he resigned as the nation’s provisional president in 1946 with a blast at France’s political parties. ♦>> '■ > •' ’■» i t u Social Security Tc Farm People Jan. 1 Over tihree - and- a -half million farm operators will be earning old age and survivors insurance for themselves and their families beginning January 1, Lnristfan H. HIGH COURT TO (Continued from Page One) case and Rs action, in the form of a brief order, allows the New Jersey supreme court decision to stand. The original issue was whether Gideon’s International could distribute copies of the King James’ version of the New Testament in the schools of Rutherford, N. J. The New Jersey justices, in a 7 to 0 decision affecting only the New Testament of the Bible and allowing the Old Testament, held that any version of the Christian scriptures would be objectionable to members of the Hebrew faith and those who reject all religion. Two Indiana Solons Divided On Wilson Crumpacker Urges Wilson To Resign INDIANAPGUS (INS) — Congressmen from Indiana's two districts hardest hit by unemployment were divided in their opinion of the bird-dog statement by defense secretary Charles Wilson. They are Shepard Crumphcker, of South Bend, and D. Bailey Merrill, of Evansville, both designated by Indiana Republican chairman Alvin Cast as in most danger of defeat in the November election. .. Crumpacker called for easing Wilson out of the national picture, saying: “For the good of the Elsenhower administration and the country 1 think it is time for foot-in-mouth Charlie Wilson to resign. He is too great a burden for any administration to carry.” However, Crumpacker’s fellow Republican lawmaker, Merrill, said: "I think (he cheap clamor of these left-wing leaders and their hand-picked candidates running for congress indicates the real emptiness of the Democratic campaign.'’ Merill, who issued his statement at Evansville Wednesday night about the same time Wilson was apologizing in Chicago for likening unemployed workers to dogs, said: ”lt these left-wing labor leaders and their political cronies can spend so much of their time trying to build up this off-the-cuff remark into one of the major issues of the campaign, 1 think the American people must realize the Democrats in this campaign have viry little to offer the American peopl«."~ Congressman Merrill was joined by a colleague, Rep. Charles B. Brownson, (R) of Indiana’s 11th district. Congressman Brownson. in a rally in Indianapolis, said acidly: “Walter Reuther would twist the parables in the Bible ... I suppose If Reuther had been around in Biblical times he would have taken offense to the Lord's reference to his flock of sheep. “Wilson merely used a simple example in bis discussion of the unemployment situation, and incl-
dentally employment for 1954 the •best peacetime year In history, is the highest since World War II being better even than 1953.” The Indianapolis Republican added: •’lt’s wonderful to attend a reception in Washington now and be able to tell the cabinet members j from the waiters.” Students To Visit Gene Stratton Home Visit Geneva Home On Sunday Morning Indiana history students will visit th«* home of Gene Stratton Porter in Geneva Sunday morning at 10 o'clock in one of the annual fall tours sponsored by the four state universities and colleges. —— ■■ „—,■■■„— Fear Allied Secrets Fell To Red Hands Military Secrets Felt Compromised By French Scandal PARIS (INS) — American military authorities were reliably understood today to consider aa “compromised” all secret U. S. and allied military information which came to the attention of the French national defense committee during recent years. This information was believed to have Included North Atlantic treaty organization (NATO) strategy, for the defense of free Europe, as well as plans for safeguarding Southeast Asia. 'Hie decision to consider that such information prolxably went to Russia and Red China through the French Communint party waa reached by American military authorities a» a result of the disclosures made in connection with • France’s fantastic Spy Scandal. It was based on the confessions of Rene Turpin and Roger Labrusse, two important and trusted members of the defense committee’s secretary - general -Jean Mons, that they leaked information. American military authorities conclude that anything that passed through Mons’ office must considered compromised. Since Mons waa a' member of the defense committee since 1950, and Tunpin and Laßruese were associated with his secretariat since that time, U. S. military men feel it must l>e assumed that all important allied military Information width came before the committee may have reached Moscow. The possibility was not excluded in military circles that this situation may necessitate the revision of some aspects of SHAPE strategy for the defense of Europe. SHAPE is the supreme headquarters of the Allied powers in Europe. This matter is now being studied. Oemocrar *7ant Ada Brins Results

SUPPLIES SHIPPED (Contlnued from Page One) himself in front of the train and refused to move. He was pushed out of the way by state troopers on duty outside the prison. Wives of the striking guards joined their husbands 8n the picket line, including Mrs. M. W. Griffith, Knox, Ind., whose husband is organizer of the Indiana union local. Considerable confusion accompanied the freight car shipment. Michigan City police charged that pickets knocked on doors of residences along the street where the box cars stood, telling the housewives convicts were in the area. It developed the prison officials had sent some trusties to shovel back coal which had poured out on the ground when one of the freight cars was opened. State board of correction chairman Hugh P. O’Brien, who visited th state prison today, has declared that only 39 of the institution's 179 guards “failed to show up”—indicating they had joined the strike. The union had claimed many more. O’Brien declared that at the time , Gov. George N. Craig took office, the state prison was “a hobo jungle supported by citizens of the state. We haven't made it exactly what we’d like it to be, but at least it's cleaned up and the inmates are now housed according to classification.” WILL YOU Be One Os The 350
