Farm Export Boost Is Boon Io Farmers Downward Trend Os Prices Continues WASHINGTON (INS)— An upturn in exports of farm commodities today was seen as a major asei-t to the nation’s farmers, whose income is at the lowest point in four years. However, government farm economists expect die tbree-year downward trend to continue into next year, although at a slighter rate Os decline. Thesi, farm income is, expected to level off. Other factors, they say, will contribute to the levelling ofif, but the export picture is the most encouraging aspect. For example, the value of farm export* in July, winch ie the latest month for which figures are compiled. was 213 million dollars. That’s eight percent above the pervious July, when the figure was 197 million dollars. Meanwhile, farm imports from Other countries totalled 300 million dollars in value in July, or nine percent below the level of July. 1953. The figure then was almost 328 million dollars. . Shipments of cotton are up because of smaller supplies end higher prices of foreign-grown cotton. Exports of cottonseed oil and other oil ■products also are greater. Wheat exports continue low because of greater European production and tower world prices, which the U. S. cannot match. The soybean export market also is off. Tobacco sales to foreign countries are holding their own. Another bright epot on the export picture is the government program for ■ shipping surplus goods abroad. S. goods by getting people abroad used to them, Some of the economists are optimistic about production costs, predicting they will go down in the coming year to take the pressure ofif the farmer. Another factor in forecast* of e levelling offff of farm income decline next year is continued strong demand’ for farm products, if this keeps up while production costs go down, the farmer’s share in the food and filter dollar will increase — even if prices themselves don’t go any higher. * One way production costs may go down is through belt-right ening practices by farmers. They are expected to use old equipment an extra year, putting off purchases of new tractor, plows and combines. This sleek in demand might prompt man-bribery dealers to low er their prio*e.
