Farm land Values Hurl By Drought Values In Western States Decreased WASHINGTON (INS) — The agriculture department reported today that drought conditions are having a serious effect on farm land values in western states and causing some increase in foreclosures. But for the nation as a whole, the agriculture research service said that the farm real estate market has shown relative stability in the past year although there may be some increase in activity th coming months due to new legislation approved by congress. Officials pointed out that farm real estate values hit a post-Ko-rean peak in July, 1952 and began to decline in most states shortly thereafter. But last July, the research service estimated real estate values had dropped about seven percent below the peak. Regionally, the sharpest declines

in real estate values occurred in the mountain states and areas affected by the drought. At the same time foreclosures were on the increase in the dry areas of the west. The. department declared that the prospect that net farm income wil be lower in 1954, because of reduced production and lower commodity prices, contributes to some underlying weakness in the farm real estate market. Under legislation approved this summer by congress, the farmers home.administration has been authorized to insure loans for a greater number of farm items including soil and water conservation projects. In addition, the federal housing administration has been given authority to provide easy credit to farmers seeking FHA-insored loans to purchase farm property. These developments, officials said, are expected to bolster the farm real estate market and result in “an expanded farm program of sound agricultural credit.’’ j ■ If you have something to sell or rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad.
