Parakeets Perform Solely By Instinct Parakeet Is Not Smart, Mimics CHICAGO (INS) — Dog may be man’s best friend but another pet is taking the inside track with his wife — the gaudy-feathered parakeet. — Regardless of who rules the roost, the final word in many homes comes from the bird with the doll baby voice.

This launched Chicago newsman John Justin Smith on a novel investigation. What he learned about parakeets could fill a book — and did. His findings were published in a paperback volume (by Louis Mariano «t Chicago) with a preface by Lincoln Park Zoo Director R. Marlin Perkins who confides, “The only pet I have at home is a budgie.” Smith says a parakeet may seem smart but he lives by his instincts, not hto wits. He ran up against a woman who claimed her bird could count up to five. The bird, in climbing a toy ladder, always paused on the fifth
rung. Smith says: "No matter how many exteneions were put on the ladder, the little guy would four rungs hastily and then pause on the fifth". But Smith credits the feat merely to "his instinct to follow * pattern of behavior . . . taught to him by forcing him to stop on every fifth rung.” Gafe Gift However, this shows — brains or not — what you ean bet a parakeet to do. Smith’s study provides a closeup of the bird's eating, bathing and personally! traits. The gift of gab is part and parcel of the parakeet. But what if he's mum’ Smith advises: "Be patient. Occasionally birds are able to repeat words after hearing them only once, but this is rare." He says the bird tries to copy any sound that impresses him. One, he says, became fascinated by a leaky kitchen faucet and got under his owner’s hide with, "Drapp . . drapp . ..drapp.” The wolf whistle may delight some bird owners. But Smith says its a bad habit for a bird to get into. It may distract him from learning to talk. Words starting with “P” and “B” are easiest to mimic. That’s why the expression "pretty boy" is so popular. Smith urges: “Don't be hasty to roar parakeet if he fails to talk. He may be a nbe.” Bex lite may become a teat urge for a bird accustomed only to humans. Smith learned thia discourages many Wmild-be house breeders. He says: “If you present your bird with a wife, the chance are extremely small that they will get along well together. They probably will fight — almost as heatedly as people. "Breeding parakeets is not easy — unless you’re a parakeet.” If you nave rometbing to sell o’ rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad. It brings results.
