Indiana SEPT. 8 50 Beautiful Girls In Annual Contest First Preliminary Contests Tonight ATLANTIC CITY. N. J.. (INS) —Fifty beautiful girls nurtured in every state of the union, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Canada parade their looks, charm and talent tonight in the first of three preliminary sessions that lead to the selection of Miss America 1955. The panel of 11 jujdges, including some beautiies in their own right, make their final pick shortly before midnight Saturday. The competing lovelies made their public debut Tuesday night in a parade of floats along this resort city's famed board-walk. The dazzle of the occasion and the expected crowd were cut do*n by a steady drizzle that fell throughout the parade. The girls, wearing a million dol14u*s worth of furs loaned for the occasion, rode on 32 floats, all of them beautifully decorated and gaily lighted. The parade was held at night for the first time in the history of the contest to mark Atlantic City’s centennial celebration,,, The judges, including movie star Grace Kelly, opera singer Mimi Bensell and Miss America of 1944, Venns Ramsey, will pick ten girls during the three nights of eliminations. From that group, the winner will be selected Saturday night on the basis of her appearance in a bathing suit and an evening gown and her demonstration of talent.

Food Poisoning No. 1 Picnic Risk: WASHINGTON. (INS) — Food poisoning tops ante and rain ae the chief picnic hazard. Bacteriologists with the U. S. department of agriculture report that food cooked in advance and then not chilled promptly accounts for most cases of food poisoning in hot weather. They explained that while cooking destroys most bacteria that euwses illness, ft-does NOT protect food against later contamination and> spoilage. In fact, cooking makes many foods, particularly those in the protein group, more soft and moist for easier growth of bacteria. Spoilage hazards, for example, are: The stewed chicken that etande in its broth overnight on the kitchen table, or ■’ The stuffed hard-cooked eggs that waited several hours in the picnic basket, or The unrefrigerated cream-filled or cuetard-filled cakes and pastries. For safety, the specialists directed; \ “Chill food a* quickly as possible after cooking and keep it ait 40 degrees F or cooler until served or until reheated for serving. "If a mixed salad containing protein foods like meat. eggs, fish or ■ poultry is prepared in quantity, refrigerate in small enough containers so that it can chill rapidly.” If such a salad is put In the refrigerator in large buckets, the experts warned, chilling may be eo slow that spoilage will occur in the center. Care also must be taken to pro-, tect frozen cooked dishes from spoilage. The bacteriologists advised thawing in the refrigerator for food that takes as long as three to four hours to thaw at room temperature. They added that the bacteria does not change the taste, odor or appearance of the food ts> give a warning of poisoning. (
