Arnold Palmer Wins National Amateur Title GROSSE POINTE, Mich. (INS) Handsome Arnold Palmer, 24-year-old salesman from Wickliffe, 0., came from behind like a true champion Saturday to whip international star Robert Sweeny for the 1954 U.S. amateur golf crown. The youthful Palmer, son of a golf pro, fought back from a twodown deficit at the halfway mark in the 36-hole final test at the Grosse Pointe Farms Country club to annex the 54th USGA title. Palmer caught his opponent on the 30th green and then he went ahead on the 32nd to stay. He scored a one-up victory over a 43-year-old veteran of the European golfing set. Sweeny, born in Pasadena, Calif., but a gentleman who annexed the British open crown in 1937, was attempting to become the second oldest player in the USGA history to win the championship. Jack Westland, at 47, won in 1952. Palmer, who bad disposed of veteran star Frank Stranahan, and crooner Don Cherry in earlier rounds, found himself three down after five holes in the morning round against Sweeny. A red-hot putter pulled the good looking Ohioan even at the 10th but after that it was Sweeny’s putter which controlled the greens of the plush 6,875-yard course near Detroit. Sweeny holed a fine 30-footer on the tough 13th green and after 18 holes, he was two strokes ahead. Palmer’s drive pulled him even again at the 27th but on number 28, Sweeny sunk a 35-footdt to go ahead for the last time. The match was deadlocked again on the 30th hole and both halved the 31st green. * Palmer placed a perfect drive and then followed up with a torrid two-iron shot on the 425-yard 32nd green. His shot stopped some sff feet from the pin while Sweeny’s tee shot landed in the rough and his second shot was too short to make the green. Palmer knocked his next shot true to the cup to grab the lead and from that point. Sweeny. only was the runnerup. Palmer’s triumph was a fitting climax to six year’s of hgpe and six days of superlative golf. His other major victory in 1954 was recorded at the Tam O’Shanter Country club early in the month where he won the AllAmerican tournament crown. Milwaukee Sets New Attendance Record MILWAUKEE HNS) Milwaukee and midwest Braves baseball fans took tholF'cue from the perfect weather to ride rough-shod over their National League season attendance record at Milwaukee County Stadium Sunday. While the Brooklyn Dodgers were pouring it on the Braves, the fans played haVoc with the turnstiles, clocking them for a paid a-t tendance of 45,922. The capacity throng raised the season's total to 1,841,666, or 15,269 patrons more than the number which watched the Braves during the entire record-breaking season of 1953. Detailed plans for the start of practice and the schedule will be announced later. ’ Joe Bach Fired As Coach Os Steelers PITTSBURGH (INS) Walt’Kiesling took over direction of the Pittsburgh Steelers today following the resignation of head coach Joe Bach. Club President Art Rooney announced the ouster Sunday night when the squad returned to Its Olean, N.Y. training camp after its third straight exhibition defeat. Kiesling, who is 50 years old and a veteran of National Professional Football League coaching, will retain backfield coach Gene Ronzani who was ousted as Green Bay’s head mentor last season, and Chuck Cherundolo and probably will add another aslstant. He served as an interim Steeler head coach in 1939 and 1941. Bach, a 52-year-old former Notre Dame lineman who was one of Hie famed seven mule.s, is the second casualty of the exhibition grind. Just one week ago Curly Lambeau was fired as head coach of the Washington Redskins. Bach was booed repeatedly Saturday night while the Steelers were being walloped, 36-14, by the Green Bay Packers. Earlier they had lost to the Chicago Bears and the Baltimore Colts. Bach’s two year stint with the Steelers resulted in 11 league victories and 13 defeats. Ho had coached them prevciously to 1935 and 1936. Rooney, a close personal friend of B&ch. stated: “The pressure is- just too tough now .In the old days, a win or loss didn't matter too much. Now it's a cold-blooded business. ’’ Central Soya Team Is Awarded Trophy The Central Soya waterball team won the sportsmanship trophy at the Poe firemen's day Saturday. Dodgers Whip Braves Twice To Cut Lead YORK (INS) —Time waa when the Brooklyn Dodgers could be counted upon to get far out ahead of the pack and then drive their supporters to the brink of suicide with a faltering finish. This year, they’re doing things in reverse. ' They’re surging now, coming oh with a six-game winning streak that has cut the New York Giants’ National League lead to a panicky game and a half. )More than the mere fact that they’re winning, it is the way that the Dodgers are doing it that is impressive. Sunday, they just about wiped out the laet slim Milwaukee hopes with a 12-to-4 and 11-to-4 sweep of a doubleheader. - In the opener, the Dodgers watched the Braves come from behind to tie the score with two runs in the ninth. Then, in the 11th inning, they batted around, scoring eight runs with Billy Cox contributing a triple and a single to the spree. The second game was no contest, after that. Billy Loes coasted to his 11th victory behind a 16-hit attack that included home runs by Gfl Hodges, Al Walker and Duke Snider, who also had one in the first game. * The Giants, meanwhile, had to scramble to salvage a split of their double bill with St. Louis. A4 Grammas singled with the bases loaded in the 11th to give the Cardinals a 5-to-4 decisi m in the first game, in which Willie Mays belted his 39th homer for the Giants and Stan Musial hit two for St. Louts. Two round-trippers by Jim Rhodes and one by Hank Thompson helped the Giants take the afterpiece, 7 to 4. In other National League action, the Cincinnati (Redlegs defeated Philadelphia twice, 3 to 2 and 8 to 4, running the Phillies’ losing streak to seven games, and the Chicago Cubs built their win skein to.i tour by toppling Pittsburgh, 7 to 4 and 4 to 1. Ted Kluszeyski tied Mays in the home run derby by homering in each game for Cincinnati. However, it was Ed Bailey’s seventhittoing circuit clout that actually won the game for the Redlcgs, enaffrmg Art Fowler to' shade Robin Roberts.

In the American League, Cleveland stretched ite lead to four games by winning two while the New York Yankees were engnged to a single 4-to-l thrashing of the Chicago White Sox. Bob Lemon became the majors’ first 29-game winner as he and Art Houtteman pitched the Indians to 6-to-2 and 8-to-l triumphs Over Boston. Baltimore swept Washington, 8 to 4 and 5 to 0, Joe Coleman scattering six hits for the sScondgame shutout. Detopit djwned Philadelphia, 14 to 3 and 2 to 1, with players on both teams engaging in an angry free-fcr-all in the ninth inning of the opener. The brawl started’ when Marion Frlcano-who pitched the ball that fractured the skull of Chicago’s Casa Michaels Friday night • bit Detroit hurler Steve Gromek over the kidney. Gromek charged to the mound, and soon both teams were engaged to combat. Umpire Bill Runge was knocked down trying to restore order and Lou Dimmer ofy the A's sprained a thumb. There were no other casualties. Gromek recorded his 15th victory and Ned Garver, who twirled a six-hitter in the nightcap, got ' his tenth. Red Wilson homered twice-once with the .bases full In the opener.

Lemon became a 20-g«me winner for the sixth time in seven seasons as he scattered eight Boston hits. Houtteman granted six in The second contest. Vfc Wertz hit a homer for Cleveland in each game, and an encouraging note for the Indians was a circuit blow to the ninth Inning of the afterpiece by the slumping A| Rosen.
