MRS. DE LANE BOWMAN HONORED WITH SHOWER 'Mna. DeLane Bowman, the former Jean Haines, was honored with a miscellaneous bridal jhower Thursday evening by Miss Phyllis Kohli and Miss Gloria Crownover at the latter’s home. .Upon her arrival, the honored <>- guest was presented with a corsage of gladioli. Games were played end prizes awarded to Mrs. Bowman. Miss 'Phyllis Mattax, Mrs. Arthur Shoaf and (Mrs. Paul Behner, whp in turn gave them to the guest of honor. The bride received many useful gifts which were displayed on a large table, decorated with pink and white streamers, an umbrella and rice filled balloons. As the bride opened her gifts, the ballons were broken and the bride was showered with rice as well aa gifts. Those unable to attend bn. sending gifts were the Meadames Glen Strahmj Jim Arnold, Doyle Haines, Russell Bowman, Phillip Kohli, Richard Martin, Howard Steiner, Russell Haines and Miss Pauline Schwartz. 4-H CLUB VISITS OHIO CAVERNS Members of the Happy Hustlers f-H club of Washington township and their leaders traveled by school bus recently to the Ohio caverns. At noon the group enjoyed a sack lunch at a pavillion there after which ttyey toured the caverns for an hour. Later they visited Indian Lake where they went swimming and took a boat ride on the "Squaw.” The captain asked two of- the girls, Grethchen Schnepp and Doris Ann Bluhm, to steer the .boat while he explained some points of interest. He also asked the girls to sing the 4-H song. On the return trip the bus driver, Gena Arnold, stopped aftd treated the group. • Present for the trip were Julie Sanders, Carol Ann Miller, Doris ■Ann Bluhm, Linda McKean, Arvilla Smith, Phyllis and. The lesson, "Congressional Temperance Society,” was presented by Georgia Gage. Plans were made for the county convention which will be held Friday at the Monroe Methodist church. The meeting will get underway at ten o’clock In the morning and a potluck dinner will be served at noon. The Methodist Everready class will meet with Mrs. L. A. Cowens, 609 West Acfams st., instead of Mrs. John T. Myers as previously announced. The meeting will take place at seven-thirty o'clock Thursday evening. Road Repair Starts On U.S. 27 South The -west side of U. 8. b'fthway 27 south of Decatur, between the Winchester street intersection of 27 and the Monroe road turnoff six miles south, is now being resurfaced by the Indiana state highway dejiartment. The west side of the road has been crumbling fvf several years, and has beeq quite rough in spots. Traffic was routed one-way during the resurfacing process. and northbound traffic wae routed partway over the eant burm.
Police To Probe Illness Os Girl Believe Beating Principal Cause x INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — Police revealed z today that an investigation is being conducted in the case of a three-year-old Madison girl who is near death in Riley Hospi tai. Physicians gt the Indianapolis hospital report Pamela Hulett’s condition as "very poor." Homicide detectives say they believe the child was “severely beaten.” The child’s mother, Mrs. Norma Hdlett, 22, of Madison, admitted switching the child several times for “wetting the bed.” She has spent considerable time at her daughter’s bpdside in Indianapolis. Dr. Jack Modisett, of Madison, who was summoned ky Mrs. Norma Hulett, reported the child was near death when he first examined her. it was on his recommendation she was taken to Riley. He reported the child's body bore Welts and there was a deep mark on, the left side of her head that could have been caused by a blow. He said it was evident the child was suffering from inter-cranial bleeding and would need brain surgery. There were indications a grand jury investigation will be called whether the child lives or dies.The father, Robert Hulett, 23. a short order cook, is separated from his wife, who Is expecting a third child, denied any knowledge of the beating.

Exhibit Don Lutes, local greenhouse proprietor and pottery distributor, is one of 39 florists whe will have an exhibit of potted plants and pottery at the Indiana state fair, Sept. 210 The colorful show will be located in the horticulture and agriculture building at the Indiana fairgrounds. It is sponsored by the Indiana state fair florist exhibitors. Berne Man Faces City Court Charge Indalecio Ramirez, of Berie, was arrested by the city police last night and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He appeared In city court at 11 a. m. today. .... Ramirez was arrested at 6:10 p. m. after he made a wide right turn from Monroe onto Second street, hitting a car driven by Mrs. Cecil iMelchl. Ramirez was Incoherent when apprehended by the city police, and was taken to the county jail to await trial today.
