Aid Fall Pastures By Seeding 01 Rye Seed Rye As Soon As Land Prepared Adams county farmers can add two to four weeks to their fall pastures, and- derive an' equal amount of early spring grazing, by seeding Balbo rye as soon, as the land can be prepared, county agent L. E. Arch-bold advised today. Farmers in the drouth area ed. because they can reduce outof Indiana are especially intereet-of-pocket costs in bam feeding or in the purchase of roughage substitutes, by seeding Balbo rye now. Rye can be seeded in a number of places on the farm, saye Archbold, such as in stubbie fields which have no grass seedings, or after any crop is harvested. A new method of seeding, increasing in popularity, is to drill rye in legume or legume-grass stands where the meadow will be left over for pasture or be plowed up next spring for corn. Rye seeded in this way takes* no acreage from other crops and allows for earlier grazing than when seeded after corn or soybeans. Seeding rye in the meadow does not destroy the existing stand, bu-t rather improves its growth where rye is fertilized. Grazing rye that’s seeded in meadows results in much Jew soil trampling than when seeded where land is plowed, according to agricultural extension experiments. The usual plan followed in seeding rye in the meadow or in stubble fields where the straw is removed is to pull the drill back of the disc, so that the seedbed can be prepared and the seed drilled in one operation. In heavy stubble it may be necessary to plow under combined- straw. The sooner seedings are made now. tiie earlier and better will be the fall grazing, warns Archbold. Rye may be seeded up to late October, but late seedings will furnish very little fali or early e-pring grazing. The usual rate of seeding is six to seven pecks per acre. Balbo is the leading variety of rye lietog grown in this county and supplies of certified seed of this variety are available locally. Seed sources are Bated in th< county agent’s office, at the Deeatur post office. For quicker growth and a heavier carrying capacity, Archbold suggests seeding fertilizer with the ryd. A good wheat fertiliser is satisfactory. The poorer the soil, the heavier the fertilizer application and the higher the percent of nitrogen, used, advisee Archbold. IKE SEEKS TO / ICssUessd From Page Owl In view of Mr. Eisenhower'* response, there was speculation that GOP leaders might try a maneuver aimed at unions and sidetrack the broader senate bill which both outlaws and party and imposes restrictions on unions. Rep. Francis E. Walter (D-Pa.l, said his Democratic colleagues favor the senate measure and added that the house would approve a Communist ban overwhelmingly' if the administration “gives a green light for a vote."
