I °® Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Christian Giving.' I Corinthians 16:1-4; II Corinthians 8-1-9, for Sunday, August 22. Growth by Christian giving is due to grateful expressions in the life that has been given health, strength, talent to render service producing compensation; also, tn such a life there is found the grace of God flowing from salvation by the mercies of God. V.l. "Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye." Paul used the poverty of the Jerusalem Christians as an opportunity of giving and also as a means of uniting the Gentiles with the Jerusalem church of Jewish origin. VI "Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him. that, there be ne gathering when -1 come" This chapter follows the chapter on the risen Lord which was memoralised by Christians weekly on the first day; with this profound experience there needed to be expressed gratitude; one way would be sharing what they had with others. Giving should be personal, voluntary, regular, perennial. V.l. "Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia.” Paul resorts to stimulating giving by {he Christian witnessing in the liberal gifts of the churches in Macedonia. It is a fine art to let one's light shine not for self praise but for the glory of God. V. 2. "How that in a great trial of affliction, the abundance of their joy. and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality.” These Christians did not give till it hurt, hut they gave till it felt pood. To them it was not the law of the tithe but the law of the grace of God. It is what is left over for one’s needs rather than claiming the right to nine-tenths. Mr. LaTourneau. the wealthy industrialist, gives ninetenths of his income. The widow gave her two mites—all that she had with nothing left, for which .Christ commended her. V. 3. ‘‘For to their power. I bear One hundred thousand men and women have registered in the guest books at the United Nations Meditation Room since Oct. 15, 1652. President Eisenhower, signing the House Joint Resolution which adds the words “under God” to the Hedge of allegiance to the flag, said the change reaffirmed “the transcendence of religious faith in America's heritage and future.” - & & The total of relief supplies shipped overseas by Lutheran World Relief passed the 100,000,600 pound mark July 0, when two boats, carrying LWR cargo left the United States for Germany and the Middle East. The event was announced by Bernard A. Confer, executive secretary of the National Lu.heran Council's material aid agency. -

record, yua, and beyongl tbeir power were willing.of themselves; praying us with much entreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministry to the saints.” There was no need of a financial campaign in this church, for the people had such a deep Christian experience that there was no limit to their generosity; they felt they were the losers if they could not be counted in on a program of Christian fellowship with those in need. V. 5. "And this tney did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.” The amount of giving exceeded Paui’s expectation; the secret of their liberality was in their full surrender and consecration to the Lord; they did this. because they loved the Lord devotedly and in them was the redemptive purpose of God. No wonder the Lord loveth a cheerful giver. V. 6. “Insomuch as we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would finish in you the same grace also.” Titus working with Paul was directed to carry out the program prompted by the grace of God. Follow up work is important. V.7. “Therefore as ye abound in everything, in faith and utterance, and in knowledge and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.” The emphasis is on grace and not on a pledge made. They are_jo remember that by grace they are saved. This grace that they expressed in fhith, utterance, knowledge. and love, was excellent but they needed also to excel in the grace of giving. V.B. “I speak not by commandment. but the occasion of the forwardness Os others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.” Paul does not command that the Corinthians should give, but tells them what others have done and appeals to them to show their love by their deeds. V. 9. “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes, he became poor, and ye through his poverty might become rieh.” Christ gives us the matchless motive of giving. Our giving at its best is nothing compared with what he gave. The holy communioa service is the church’s reminder of the LoriFs gift for us. —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.8.A., and used by permission. In 1953. 59 southern cities gave Negroes unrestricted use of main public libraries in contrast to only four giving such privileges in 1941. In Korea, more than 9 million people, mostly refugees, are penniless and homeless. In India, millions are still on a “below subsistence” diet. In the Middle East, one million Arab refugees exist on a meager role. In Europe, there are at least 11 million “uprooted" persons, many having been in camps 6 years. In Hong Kong, 300,COO refugees from Communist China live in squatters' huts. All need clothing and employment. Church World Service appeals to the churches it represents for help.
