very Important because of the cut Lu wheat allotments in Adams county for next yew. Farm re— l rebar* are measuring results in wide row corn plantings on the agronomy farm, 7 mile* northwest of West Lafayette on US highway 52. Several carloads of farmers from Adame county axe expected tojneke the trip to see this expsMßWiut, and several others of equalinterest. The extension experts used a cultipackemeeder to seed 20 different legue-grase mixtures In 60inch row® pn June 30. They’re searching tor mixtuers that can get enough rain and tight between rows of corn. They want a mixture that will provide pasture, or cover that can be turned under for green manure. Some rust and ’fly-resistant wheat was even planted between the wide-row corn on June 30 to see if it would catch, and how it would compare in growth with rye, which makes a good stand. So far, the wheat looks good. “Our decision to try 60-inch rows- this year stems from 1963 research,” says O. W. Luekemeder. superintendent of the Purdue

agronomy farm. He got 114 bushel® of corn to the. acre and a good gras® and clover stand with few weede last year when he seeded his mixture after second cultivation in July, using 60-inch row's. The seeding consisted of rye grass, crimson clover, Korean lespedeza, and Madrid sweet clover. Luekemeier’s corn yield was almost as much as he got in 40-inch rows where his legume and grass combination failed in last August’s drouth. The same legume-grass l stand looked best in the 80-incty rows, but the sacrifice in corn yield was too great These double-width rows made 108 bushels to the acre. Ptaßting rate on all treatments was 15,000; kernels per acre. No matter what a com grower is interested in—fertilization, irrigation, deep tillage or light and water requirements —a specialist will be available to talk to on agronomy day, August 26. Exhibits on corn picker adjustments, farm safety, and grain drying, in addition to talks on waiter requirements of corn, effects of temperature on production, the future of corn raising, liquid fertilizers, sudan grees. etc., will be Included tn the day’s program, which starts at 8:30 a. m. Farmers are invited to come when they can, morning or afternoon, to see the latest in corn research. Further information on agronomy day may -be obtained from county agent L. E. Archbold, In tha basement of the Decatur post office. Farm Bureau Co-op Building At Monroe The Adams County Farm Bureau Co-op is constructing a new building in Monroe and will move its offices and implement department* from Berne to Monroe. • Constructed of cement blocks, the building will be 108 by 56 feet and will be located east of the Farm Bureau elevator in Monroe.
