Important Provisions ' Os Tax Law Explained
(Editor’* note: "What the new tax bill mean* to you**. Thia Is the third in a aeries of articles explaining soma of thy,, major provisions in the new tax bill passed by congre**. - The bill, which includes more than 8,000 changes in the nation’s tax laws, will save Indi* viduals and business firms an estimated >1,385,000,000 this year. The series explains how these changes affect you and how you can best take advantake of the new rules and regulations. This article describes the new medical expense provisions.) By THOMAS J. FOLEY WASHINGTON (INS) -7* Families, or individuals, with big doctor and hospital bills can breath at least one sigh of relief today — thanks to a tax break in the new revenue revision law. An estimated 8,500,000 persons will save about 80 million dollars under the change approved by congress. On your tax forms, you have a choice of how- you subtract — or deduct —for such things as medical real estate and other taxes, union dues, church contributions and interest payments. It you take a flat deduction tor these items of 10 percent of your income; the medical expense change will not affect you. But if your deductions are fairly big and will amount to more than 10 percent of your income, then you probably will list them, and the new medical provision may help. Now, If you have listed your deductions in the past, you will remember that you can deddct all medical expenses amounting to more than five percent of your gross income. The new bill allows more medical deductions by lowering the figure to three percent. For Instance, if your wages are >3,000 a year, and you paid the dentist and doctor >l2O, you will now be able to deduct >3O. Three percent of >3,000 is >3O. Your medical bills were >3O more than the three percent. Under the old law. you could not have deducted anything. The old law limited medical deductions to >1,250 for each individual with a >5.000 limit if you filed a joint return. The new law allows up to >2,500. with a >IO,OOO limit on a joint return. Up to now. you could count all your medicine and pharmacy bills in figuring your total medical expenses. The new law makes it tougher on you in this respect by allowing only those medicine and pharmacy expenses exceeding .one your For instance, it the man with >3.000 in wages has drug store bills totaling >45, he can count only >ls as a medical expense. One percent of >3,000 is >3(E ’’ For the first time, medical expenses for the last Illness of a person who dies can be deducted on the dead person’s final tai return. As before, no medical expenses covered by health insurance can be deducted. There was no change in the law that allows ail persons over 85 to deduct all medical expenses.
