Princess Margaret Can't Visit U. S. Trip Too Long For Unmarried Royalty LONDON (INS) — Princess Margaret is a big girl now — big enough to have a Rolls-Royce and tour London’s night spots — but she can’t go to the United States on her own. A usually well-informed source close to the royal family said today theft the trip for which the princess tyks been longing will have to wait until after she marries. The source said th?t court protocol experts have ruled that it would not be "right” tor the princess, who is 23, to make such a long trip “as an unmarried lady.” Margaret has been talking to friends for several years about the possibility of visiting America. Her desire to see the bright lights of New York was whetted in long “bull sessions” with Sharman Douglas when the latter’s father, Lewis Douglas, was U. S. ambassador to Britain. Friends said that the princess also was free in * expressing her envy of the trip Queen Elizabeth made to the U. S. and Canada with Prince Philip in 1951, before the queen's accession. Margaret has done a good bit of traveling, in Europe, Scandinavia and in Africa, but usually as a companion of Queen Mother Elizabeth. When she visited British troops in West Germany recently it was one of the few occasions on which she has left England without another member of the royal famuy. —™ :—s— Queen Mother Elizabeth is scheduled to visit the U. S. this fall, but Buckingham Palace spokesmen insist that there is no chance Margaret will go along. Nor would they throw any light on how soon Margaret will pick a husband from her group of escorts. Margaret will be 24 on Aug. 21, an age when by royal standards she is dangerously near the old maid classification. Elizabeth was 21 when she married. Vahlout, a brilliant violinist, for years played with symphony orchestras and name bands but now uses his talents in “preaching” on the violin. Verna, his wife is an accomplished pianist and together they have been associated with the young peoples’ church of the air over the Mutual Network, and have played in most of the states in the nation.
Commons Approves Suez Settlement British Government Settlement Upheld LONDON (INS) — The government’s Suez settlement was upheld Thursday night by the house of Commons, but not before the Labor .party political capital out of a split in the Conservative party s ranKH. ana rne spur itself turned out to be not as deep as expected. After five hours of bitter and heated debate, the house approved the outline of the Anglo-Egyptian agreement by a vote of 257 to 26. All but six Laborites abstained, and the half-dozen who cast votes were on the side of the government. The 26 votes in opposition were all those of the "Suez” group of Tory rebels, who numbered at one time an even 40. At the last minute, the other "rebels” decided not to vote against their party leadership. The Laborites could have overthrown the Churchill government if they had desired, but preferred instead to place emphasis on the differences within the Conservative ranks. Opposition leader Clement Attlee taunted Churchill with the comment: “We entirely agree with th*ev< acuation of our troops from Egypt We remember saying how hopeless

it was to try to have a base wjth a hostile population there. We didn’t get much sympathy then, but that is acknowledged now.” The former Labor party prime minister added that the agreement was on “certainly the worst terms . . . I have ever seen.” He said equal, or better terms for the settlement could have been obtained two years ago. Sir Winston, who had not intended to take part in the debate, was stung to reply to a Laborite backbencher’s charge that the prime minister .actually h«T «M couraged the revolt in hflt b ow'sf party in an “under the table” deal. Milwaukee Man's Honesty Pays Off MILWAUKEE (INS) — A Milwaukee garbage collector's honesty paid off handsomely. Jan. 25 when 26-year-old Peter Schelbrock was out on the Job, he spotted a black plastic bag containing $667. He turned it over to police. The bag with the $667 was to Schelbrock Thursday by police who said they had been unable to find anyone to claim it. i If you have sometning to sell or rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad.
