Coffin's Trial Is Continued In Canada Charge Prospector Killed Americans PERCE, Que. (INS) — The defense lost two rounds today in efforts to strike out testimony against prospector Wilbert Coffin, for the slaying of. one of three American hunters killed while on a hunting trip last year on the wild Gaspe Peninsula. According to one witness, Arthur Hastie, a 49-year-old broker, Coffin, 43. joined in the search for the three Pennsylvanians in the Gaspe forest and even recruited two other persons for the purpose. Coffin Is accused of slaying one of the hunters, 17-year-old Richard Lindsay of Hollidaysburg, Pa. His bear-clawed body, with that of his 47-year-old father, Eugene Lindsay, and a friend, 20-year-old Albert Claar, was found nearly a month after they disappeared into the forest to hunt in June? 1953. Hastie said Coffin bad tried to sell him a piece of land in Gaspe, saying that an analysis had revealed high quality copper on it. He had paid Coffin 650 and with another prospector, accompanied the

ajxused about July 20, 1958, to inspect the claim. Hastle said no valuable copper deposits could be found. Defense attorney Raymond Mther objected to Hastie's testimony on the grounds It tended to "deal with Coffin s character." The objection was overruled by Justice Gerard Lacroix. Maher also objected to evidence of Dr. Jean Marie Roussel, provincial government medico - legal expert regarding an autopsy practiced on the remains of Lindsay senior and Albert Claar. He abjected on the grounds that Coffin was accused only of the murder of Richard Lindsay. The court admitted the evidence, pointing out if was necessary to establish identity of the bones of the younger Lindsay. Dr. Roussel identified hair, blood and flesh found on a rifle discovered near the dead hunters' bodies, as being that of the elder Lindsay. Fifty of the 105 witnesses called by the crown had been beard up to Monday night as the crown sought to establish Coffin's movements after he left home to go to Montreal, at about the time the hunters are believed to have been slain and their bodies left for the bears. Witnesses said Coffin apparently was well provided with money when he drove from Gaspe towards Montreal and drank large quantities of beer and hard liquor en route. His pickup truck left the road three times at various points, witnesses said. Mrs. Rhoda Stanley, Coffin's sister was recalled to the witness stand Monday to identify towels and blue jeans she said Coffin brought home after the Montreal trip. The articles had earlier been identified as belonging to the three hunters.
