Farm Commodities Exports Increased 14 Percent Boost « Over Previous Year WASHINGTON (INS) -Ths farm export picture brightened today. ? The agriculture department reported that foreign shipments of U. One of agriculture secretary Ezra Taft Benson's first acts upon assuming office was to expend the old' office of foreign agricultural relations into the foreign agricultural service. This agency hate sent commodity experts abroad to help rebuild markets for U. S. *arm product*. . - In addition, Benson sent foreign trade missions to Europe, Latin America and Asia to learn what can be done in those areas to expand markets. Recommendations from [the trade missions, however, have not yet been put into effect since they were only made one month ago. Many of the suggestions called for revision of present trade regulations, including tariffs. The latest export reports show that foreign shipments of agriculture product* during the first 11 month* of the marketing year — which ended June 30—were valued at two billion 664 million dollas. A major development in the past few months has been an increase in demand for U. S. cotton. This is the principal commodity supporting the upward trend in agricultural exports since January. Cotton shipments in May totaled -447 thousapd bales, an increase of 28 percent over the 272 thousand bales exported in May. 1953. Cotton exports in May, however, fell 20 percent below the 434 thousand bales export in April, due in a large part to labor troubles at Galveston, Tex. During the first 11 months of the 1953-54 marketing year, cotton exports totaled three million 240 thousand bales, an increase of 16 percent from the corresponding period of the previous year. An increase in wheat exports, first noted in April, contained in May with exports totaling 26 million bushels, compared with 21 million bushels in April and in the previous May.
