Low Cattle Prices 1 May Bring Demands Demands For Price Support Expected WASHINGTON (IN) —Demands for price supports on cattle-whicn echoed so loudly-through vast areas of the nation last year-may be renued thie fall as price® once . more his the low levels of 1953. So far little has been said during the past few months about low cattle prices, despite the fact that •pAt&s-now are right around the low levels of last July. One agriculture department livestock expert explains there are two reasons why there has not been much shouting over low cattle prices yet this year. They are: 1. Last summer, prices suffered several sharp breaks which dramatized the decline, while this year they have remained relatively stable. 2. The heart of the marketing season is a few months away, and the real decline in prices has not yet been felt. As of the past week, prices of 1 fed cattle and feeder cattle were slightly altove those of July, 1953, while prices paid for cowe were down slightly from a year ajtp; This year the dropln cattle prices also will be coupled , with a decline in hog prices, which was not the case last year when pig production was about 12 percent smaller than in 1954. This decline in hog prices should be reflected in lower consumer prices for pork. And. since pork and beef are aopiewhat. oompeti-' tive, the lower pork prices probably will help keep a lid on beef prices. The biggest decline is expected to come in prices of lower grade grass-fed cattle rather than in the high grade cattle from feed lots. High grade cattle prices, however, are expected to drop this fall slight ly below the year-ago level. The big "if es far as cattle prices are concerned Is the drought which is reappearing In much of the middlewest and Great Plaine areas. Should the drought beconfe intensified. livestock men are certain to begin a run on elaughter, and such action will mean a sharp reduction in cattle prices, f This occurred laA year, ahd was one of the reasons a huge cattlemen’s caravan travelled to Washington to make an unsuccessful deI mand of President Eisenhower and agriculture secretary Ezra Taft ■ Benson for supports on cattle.
