Bobby (homerun) Thomson is back on the bench. And the Brooklyn Dodgem are finding it increasingly difficult to beat the Braves. Thomson, whose fractured right ankle in a spring training elide four months ago sabotaged Milwaukee’s pennant plans, made his first official appearance at bat Wednesday night and managed io thwart the Dodgers again, even if only for a moment. The big outfielder, who knocked Brooklyn out of the 1951 pennant with a playoff homerun for the New York Giants, drew a standing ovation, from, the Milwaukee County Stadium crowd at 35,470 as he came to the plate for Johnny Logan with two down in the 12th and his team trailing, 2 to 1. He gave relief pitcher Jim Hughes a mild case of the heebiejeebies with his foul ball tactics and eventually got Hughes to walk him. Hank Aaron ended it seconds later, however, hy flying out. Thomson, who came to the Braves from the Giants last winter in the Johnny Antonelli trade but saw no action since his injury March 13, said he favored his right ankle a little but otherwise felt good. The Milwaukee hope, who took one swing in a pinch role Monday night during ib exhibition against 1 the Braves’ Toledo farm club and cracked a 400-foot homerun, was lifted on the basepath for Jim Pendleton but said: “I’m getting so I can run pretty good straight ahead although 1 haven't started to practice banks and tarns yet. I guess it’ll be a little while before I can do any regular playing. But I’m ready to bat when they need me.” Thomson wore a special high shoe like those worn by the Giants’; Monte Irvin a couple years ago after a similar injury. He gets daily whirlpool liaths for the ankle plus massage. He wears a tight bandage and elastic stocking when in uniform. The only scheduled major league game of the day gave Milwaukee an attendance total of 1,00,476 for 37 games and made the Braves the first club to hit the million mark this year. The power-laden Brooks were held to nine hits by Lew Burdette but managed to narrow the Giants’ league lead to five games on two deep flies to left field by Duke Snider, scoring Junior Gilliam both times. ’ ■ ' Gilliam beat out a bunt in the first inning, moved to third on Pee Wee Reese’s single and then scored on the "hook's” long fly to Aaron. The Braves tied it in the eighth on a walk to Bill Bruton, a sacrifice by Logan and single by Aaron. Then Gilliam singled iu the 12th, Reese advanced him to third with a single and Snider swatted a carbon copy of his first fly ball. Hughes, who relieved Russ (Meyer tn the ninth, notched his fourth win in five decisions. Burdette, who retired 15 in a row before Reese's sixth-inning single, lost his 16th in 17 decisions. The Braves and Dodgers resume their five-game series with a twi. night doubleheader while the Giants play at St. Louis., Pittsburgh plays a twin bill at Chicago and Philadelphia plays a twi-nlghte* at Cincinnati. - • - Tonight in theAmerleau League the Cleveland Indians take a halfgame American League lead into Philadelphia, the New York Yankees seek their 10jh straight victory over Baltimore and Chicago is at Washington. Detroit plays a day-nlght doubleheader at Boston. Copter Orders LONDON. Hurricane Jackson Whipped By Valdes I%■ ’ ■ ■ NEW YORK (INS) — A muchtouted Hurricane rode into New York on the crest of a severe electrical storm Wednesday night but couldn’t even ripple the eyelashes of Cuban heavyweight champion Nino Valdes, much less blow him down. Valdes, a betting underdog although ranked second in the world behind Ezzard Charles, virtually earned a February title match by flooring Tommy "Hurricane" Jackson of Rockaway, N. Y., three tinges in one round at Madison Square Garden for an automatic technical knockout. The coup de grace came at 2:35 of the second round of the nationally televised (CBS) match and gave promoter Jim Norris somebody to shoot for the works next winter, Norris said before the fight he
