National Loop Is Favored In All-Star Game CLEVELAND (INS)—The American league’s beleaguered 740-5 underdogs send lefthander Whitey Ford against the National League’s Robin Roberts today in a d«|pejste attempt to avert a fifth straight defeat in the 21st annual All-Star game at Cleveland’s Municipal Stadium. Such a humiliation would set a new AJI-Star record for futility for the league and for ’Manager Casey Stengel. And the possibility of seeing it happen is expected to attract a crowd approaching—if not exceeding—the 69,812 record set in this same ballyard in 1935. A xizzlin? Uii-ulllK 41<xatr>«x<& • w \r <ptU9 W TICttL wave and a sudden tailapin of Cleveland's American League leading Indians caused officials to back-pedal from an original 80,000 crowd estimate. •But, whatever the live attendance, most of tills nation’s —and Isatin America’s—sane will be able to see the game on TV or hear it on radio. The contest, beginning at 1:30 p.m. tEDT, will be televised by NBC and Mutual and broadcast by Mutual. Stengel, who Las won five straight World Series but loet four All-Star games In a row as A. L. manager, confounded the stratetegists slightly by selecting Ford, southpaw ace of his own New. York Yankees, instead of Chicago’s Bob Keegan as bis first mound workman. But Casey’s reasons were not so obscure, at that. His attention was focused upon the national’s three moot fearsome power hitters—No. 3, 4 and 5 in the batting order—namely, Duke Snider of Brooklyn. Stan Mueial of St. Louis and Ted Kluszewski of Cincinnati. All hit from the left side. <Ergo. a southpaw to attempt to immobilise them. But the Stengel strategy was one capable of back-firing spectacularly. On the other side of his ‘'big three." National League Manager Walt Alston has such menacing righthanded hitters as Gran Hamner of Philadelphia, Al Dark of New York. Ray Jablonski of St. Louis. Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella of Brooklyn and Roberts, who' is no mean 4>atsman himself. •

And on his bench, the All-Star game’s first rookie manager could gloat over amazin’ Willie Maye of the Giants, Ous Bell of Cincinnati, Oil Hodges of the Dodgers and Don Mueller of the Giants, toimention only a few. All told, the N. L. roster, aside from pitchers, had a .317 batting average going into the game, compared to a .299 American League composite. Willie Troy Comes Back For Victory NEW YQR'K (INS)—Hard-hitting Willie Troy, knocked down in the second round, made a thrilling comeback Monday night to stop Tony Anthonysat 47 seconds of the fourth round of a scheduled tenround middleweight bout at Eastern Parkway Arena. The Washington. D. C. slugger, making his first start since he war knocked out by Joey Glardello two months ago. pounded Anthony into such a condition of helplessness that referee Ray Miller halted the fight to prevent further punishment f«r_ths4<l’49JT
