Murder Charge On Ex-Leader Os Guatemala Ousted President Accused Os Death Os Political Foe GUATEMALA CITY (INSJ The Guatemalan minUtry of justice investigated today a formgl charge of murder filed against ousted leftist president Jacobo Arbenz Guzman. The accusation against Arbeta, who was forced out of office on ( June 27. said he bad plotted and responsible for the assassinaot Cob Francisco Arana in Arana, ambushed and machinegunned to death July XB, 1349. was Arbenz’ chief rival for the presidency. Maj. Alfonso Martine* wa» named along with the ek-president in the formal charges filed Wednesday by Jose Maria Palacios, a supporter and close friend of the late Arana. Martinez and Arbenz have taken asylum in the Mexican embassy in Guatemala City. Arana was killed at the bridge ’ of La Gloria at Lake Amatitlah while oh his way to confiscate a cache of arms which allegedly had been collected for an uprising against the right-wlnir dtctatorshi» of Rafael Trujjillo in the Dominican Republic. Arbenz amh'then President Juag Jose Arevalo were suspected 61 planning the uprising against Trujillo and there were murmurings at the time that they were implicated jn Arana's death. The case, however, was buried and never received a court airing. Although the government has taken no formal aettoh against Arbenz on this matter, the filing of charges by Palacios would give the anti-Red military junta a good reason not to grant Arbenz safe con--duct out of the country to exile in Mexico. ■ ,-* 1 The junta’s attorney-general's office said tt ts investigating,- however, 57 known cases ot murder, torture and kidnaping during the last days of the ousted Arbenz regime.
