Mays, Snider Pacing Teams In Flag Chase NEW YORK (INS)—Mirror, mirror on the. wall, who is the most valuable of all. Willie the Wallop or the Duke of Flatbush? This Is the substance of a simmering Center field controversy in New York today, and the answer may determine the National League champion In the' two-tean» struggle between the Giahts ana the Brooklyn Dodgers. Certainly, Managers Leo Durocher and Walter Alston, acting like guys who’ve never had it sb good, are quite content to let the battle rage. Willie Mays is winning for Leo and Duke Snijler is doing likewise for Grandpa Walter. Mays, currently the home run pacesetter in the majors, belted his 23rd roundtripper of ,the season a two-run wallop which gave the Giants a 2-to-l win over the Milwaukee Braves. The blow kept the Durochermen a game ahead of the Bums. Snider contributed his 18th home run, also a two-run smack, as the Dodgers used three circuits to down the Cincinnati Redlegs, 9 to 6. He has his safely in his last 15 games. How do the two sensational outfielders dbmpare in the statistic department and what ever became of Mickey Mantle? Mays made two hits in three trips Thursday to boost his average to .328. He has driven in 52 runs, scored 50 and made 79 hits in 241 at bats In 65 games, the 23-year-old “say hey” kid has nine doubles and five triples. Brooklyn fans claim ‘‘our guywins easy,’” and they recite Duke’s .374 average, tops in the majors, with 61 runs batted in, 95 hits in 254 trips covering 64 games. The royal Edmund has scored 49 runs and his collection ’ includes a league-high 21 doubles Aid five triples. Mays supplied the margin as exBrave Don Liddle outpitched'Warren Spahn in a duel of southpaws. Little Don, going the distance for the first time since joining the Giants, set his fpimer mates down with four hits, including a home run by Andy Pafko in the second. Spahn yielded seven hits but Mays’ left field rocket in the bottom of the second, his fifth intour days, punished Warren with his seventh loss in 14 deejions. , , , Sftider, Junfe RoyCampanella rapped circuits for Brooklyn and Ed Bailey and Ted Kluszewski four-baggered for the Redlegs- Erv Palica, with an effective five-inning relief job,, was the winner. ' ' Rookie righthander Brooks Lawrence made his major league debut a success for the St. Louis Cardinals by pitching the Red Birds to” a four-hit, 5-to-l triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates. • Philadelphia’s Phillies took over third place when Earl Torgeson’s single with the bases loaded off Paul Minner in the 11th Inning gave them a 3-to-2 decision over the Chicago Cubs. It was the seventh.loss in s row far the Bruins. Ex-Redleg Henn Wehmeler went all the way for the Phils and allowed five hits, including successive homers in the second by Hank Sauer (No. 22) and Steve Bilko. Bobby Morgan tied the. count in the seventh with a tworun blast off rookie Jim Davis. The American League jrace tightened as rookie Arnold Portocarrero and the Philadelphia Athletics topped the Cleveland Indians. 5 to 1. Portocarrero set the Tribe down with five hits. Chicago’s- White Sox moved to within two ganies of the Indians when they downed the Washington Senators. 5 to 2 behind Sandy Conj suegra and Billy Pierce. , Home rtins by ,Lou Limmer and Joe Demaestri paved the way for the As win over Cleveland-and | Art Houtteman sustained his fourth loss against seven wins. “Consubgfa won his ninth garner and very encouraging to Manager Paul Richards was Pierce’s two' and two-third innings of hitless relief hurling. The southpaw, bothered by a sore aim. was making only his second appearance since May 25. The third-place New York Yan> kees moved to within four games of the Tribe by pasting the Detroit Tigers, 11 to 2, They blasted Ned Garvpr and two jellevers for 16 hits, including a two-run homer by Morgan, who won his fifth game.
