Republicans Order Chairman Election Brown County GOP Office Held Vacant INDIANAPOLIS (INS) The Republican state committee didn't wait to bear what mystery writer G. T. Fleming Roberts might have to say about his conduct of a disputed Brown county GOP reorganization meeting but returned its verdict after hearing only the proteatants. The governing body of the GOP Monday ruled that the office of Brown county Republican chairman was vacant and directed that another election be held. Theodore Sellmaer, who was named chairman in a second Brown county election held after ■Roberts had been re-elected in a three-minute session and departed in a burst of teargun fumes, was expected to emerge as winner of the state committee-ordered election. Roberts, who had guided the Brown county GOP to its first victory in more than 10 yea/s during which the county had always gone Democratic, had declined to testify at a subcommittee hearing, claiming the three-man body was only a fact-finding group. However, the report of t the subcommittee. headed by GOP state chairman'Alvin C. Cast, of KentJand. was adopted by the entire state committee Monday, without further investigation. Roberts is affiliated with the forces of U. S. Senators William Jenner and Homer -Capehart, who were defeated in the state party reorganization. Th® committee also adopted the subeommittee’s recommendation that Martin county GOP chairman Hugh Gray, of Shoals, be declared legally chairman, but did suggest new rules be drawn for reorganiration meeting conduct. Gray became known as “the biacklien-y picker” during the hearing because he gave that as one of his occupations when he successfully withheld the source of his income after getting into the record that two of the men who opposed him were employes of the state highway department, controlled by Gov. George N. Craig. • In the third disputed county reorganization brought to the attention of . the subcommittee, which also included tenth district chairman Russell Robbins, of Richmond, and eleventh district chairman. H. Dale Brown, of Indianapolis,7no action was necessary, petition tiled by a Beujtkolomew county precinct man, was withdrawn in theThiddle committeeman admitted JennerCapdhart aides had suggested filing lhe petition. .rAfWpm . ■ ■ . Two Youths Drown In State Monday Cooling Trend In Indiana Forecast INDIANAPOLIS, (INS) — Two Indiana youths drowned while swimming in unguarded water places, and a third death was indirectly connected to the continued sweltering weather when a South Bend man drowned white sleeping beside a river. Temperatures today were back in the 90s for most of the state except the northwest corner, which benefitted from an approaching cool air mass, causing temperatures to drop to the mid80s.^;. ’ The cooling trend was expected to engulf the entire north airs central portion tonight and Wednesday in the wake of scattered thundershowers. Maximum temperatures Monday included an unofficial 98 at Crawfordsville, and official U. S. weather bureau figures of 95 at Terre Haute, 94 at Evansville, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, and 91 at South Bend. A Mars Hill teen-ager, Ronnie Glover, was drowned Monday afternoon while swimming in a creek northwest of Avon with three other boys who mistook his cries of help for a joke.
