Indians Boost League Lead To Two Full Gaines NEW YORK (INS) — Baseball will join the growing list of bans in Boston if the Rod Sox don't snap but of it soon. The Red Sox dropped their 23rd game in a 32-game home stand Monday when the Cleveland Indians ran rtot, 13 to 5, and upped their AmbiHean League lead to two full games over Chicago. Thon as att extra added kick in the teeth, the iaet-plahh Sox wore informed that Ted Wililams’ virus infection of the right lung is bordering on pneumonia and the SIOO,-000-a-yeai - slugging outfielder will be sidelined indefinitely. Everything seems to be working against the luckless Bobox. Even the elements conspired against them at the start of the season so that they managed only a handful of games in the first few weeks. Williams suffered a broken collar bone in the first 15 minutes of spring training and the Red Sox Saw their pennant hopes dim. The “splinter" rocketed their hopes once again when he returned to action and with A pin still in his shoulder, hit safely eight times out of nine in one afternoon. Then Mel iParnell suffered an injury and on 'May 28th in New York, Williams was knocked out again, this time by a virus germ. He continued playing until nine days ago but has been confined to his hotel room since. The Sox left tor their second swing of the west without him, as physicians said he would .require an indefinite period to recover fully. Manager Lou Boudreau tried another formula Monday but it ended in disaster, tie called by .phone from Harvey, ill. — where his daughter is ill, incidentally — and ordered Karl Olson into Jackie Jensen’s spot and Mickey Owen behind the plate for Sammy White. The Sox lost their seventh , straight game, and eighth in as many starts against Cleveland, on a ’ 22-hit attack off losing pitcher Bill Henry and two relievers. George Strickland sparked a sixrun fifth inning with a three-run homer for the Tribe and Al Smith followed up with a solo blast. Bob Lemon chalked up his eighth victory in 11 decisions although he was bombed out in the seventh ' with■••‘fhrtflP *fte«l Sox markers, Ray Narleski warded off thereat of the 13-hit attack. In the only other regular game scheduled, the Chicago Cubs nosed out Pittsburgh, 6 to 5, on Hank Sauer’s two-run homer — his 20th of the year. Bob Davis chalked i I

VP his thirty win in five decisions on nine hits. (Max Surkont was the loser. V* ■ ' • ' ‘ j The Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees, mortal World Series enemies, squared off in a charity exhibition game at Yankee Stadhwu. The Yankees held the Dodgers to two lone hits but lost the mayor's trophy game, 2 to 1. The Detroit Tigers lost to But, falo of the international League In another exhibition match. Tbe score was 6 to 1. Sihby Sisti, veteran Milwaukee utility infielder, retired as a player to make room for 20-year-old Al Bpangler, former Duke star signed by the Braves.
