At that time, the planets will be in opposition, as illustrated on the diagram, at bottom, supplied by the American Museum-Hayden Planetarium, New York. The two objects will then be in a straight line with the sun, with Mars on the night side of the earth and the sun on the daylight side. Because of the periods in which the two planets revolve around the sun—Earth one year. Mars slightly less than two years—oppositions occur at average intervals of about two years and two months. However", since the orbits of Mars and Earth are not circular, but elliptical, opposition distances between the two planets may vary slightly less than from 35 million miles to over 62 million miles. It is characterized by the existence of polar “caps” which wax and wane With the seasons. Winston Churchill Invested By Queen Colorful Ceremony Is Held At Castle LONDON (IN) — British prime minister ir Winston Churchill formally was invested by Queen 'Elisabeth II with the insignia of a knight companion of The Most Noble Order of the darter today in a centuries-old ceremony at Windsor Castle. The queen, aided hy officials, buckled a jewelled garter around the 79-year-old prime minister’s left knee In the colorful ceremony In the throne room at the castle. The prime minister, rumored to be on the verge of retirement, became the “junior member’’ of Britain’s oldest and highest-rank-ing order of chivalry. It was the first such ceremony conducted by the young queen, who is sovereign of the order. There are only 29 present-day members of the order founded in 1348 by King Edward HI. The queen bestowed knighthood on Churchill more than a year ago but the formal ceremony receiving him into membership had to be postponed because of the coronation and Elizabeth's world tour. Following today’s ceremony the prime minister will be entitled to wear the valued blue ellk velvet mantle and cap. the insignia of the order —a medal depicting St. George slaying the dragon — and the blue garter from which the order takes its name. Legend says that the name sprang from an embarrassing incident at a court ball during Edward’s reign. According to' the story, the beautiful, 20-year old countess of Salisbury lost her garter while dancing with the king. The gallant Edward picked up the silken band and quieted the snickering courtiers by saying sternly ‘-honi soit qui mal y pense” (Evil be to him who evil thinks); the phrase which now is the motto of the order. SWEARS ARMY (Contlamd From Pace Owe) replied: "John is trying to trade us some homosexuals in the air force for information about our next investigation." “ Carr swore that Adams frequently used the term “hostage" in reference to Schine after the 26 - year-old former McCarthy committee consultant was drafted. He flatly disputed Adams’ account of an explosive New York luncheon, and auto ride Dec. 17 . when„jthe army-counselor had testified, Cohn became enraged over the army’s refusal to give Schine. then a rookie at Fort Dix, N. J., a New York assignment. Carr said Cohn did not even mention Schine. and that the only ■irritation displayed by the McCarthy counsel was because of th4 army's alleged intention to fire Maj. Gen. Kirke B. Lawton as Fort Monmouth commander because he had "cooperated” with the McCarthy committee. The ex-FBI agent accused Adams of repeatedly “baiting" Cohn in such ways as suggesting that Schine might be sent overseas even before he finished his basic training unless the committee backed down on its plan to call members of the army loyalty board. Carr quoted Adams as saying that he would “stop at nothing” to keep loyalty board members from being subpoenaed, and insisted that Adams mentioned an “unfavorable” report on Cohn’s activities in behalf of Schine es
