Heads Workshop - y t ■l DavM Gliessman will nerve as director of a summer workshop in remedial reading at the Purdue university Center in Fort Wayne, starting July 6 and continuing three weeks until July 24. The workshop is designed to ogive teachers and teachers in training practical experience in working, with retarded readers, as well ah a background in the theory used. - Teachers may earn three semester hours of graduate or undergraduate credit, according to Dr. Richard Bateman, center director. Class sessions will be held daily Monday through Friday, from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m.. for the three week period. The workshop will include staff lectures, demonstrations with cUiidren who are retarded in reading, together with films, caw studies, and work study groups. Lectures will be given by visiting specialists on such subjects as the causes of reading disability, methods of correcting, tests used in reading, materials and games used in reading. and methods of teaching reading, Gliessman is director of the developmental reading program at Purdue’s Fort Wayne Center. He will be assisted by Dorothy Simpson, supervisor of the remedial renting program in the Lafayette elementary schools. One Driver Killed As Trucks Collide r FORT WAYNE, Ind.. (INS) — Thirty year old Robert Schwenke; of Whitehall, 0., was killed Thursday in a two-truck collision on U. S. 30 two miles northwest of Fort Polfce said Schwenke’s track rammed the rear of another track which was turning off the highway. The other driver was not hurt seriously. Accident Victim A Former Decatur Man Roger J. Schulte, 21, killed Wednesday morning in a Fort Wayne traffic mishap, is a former Decatur resident, friends said today. Schulte. an ex-navy petty officer, was killed early Wednesday when the car in which he was riding struck a truck. . He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schulte. Henry Schulte formerly operated a bath house in this city. The Schulte family has resided in Fort Wayne for several years. • • Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock from Precious Blood Catholic church, of which young Schulte was a member Burial will Tie in Fort Wayne Catholic cemetery.

Bowman Elder Dies ! After Long Illness 1 . J. * Prominent Indiana I Democrat Is Dead INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — Funeral aervicea for Bowman Elder, prominent in the Indiana Demo- 1 cratic party and the American ' Legion. Will be held Saturday afternoon at his suburban home near Indianapolis. (Elder, who was 66. died at tho Methodist hopskai' where he had been a patient for 11 months. ' Elder was a leader in the-Admin- i titrations of Governor Paul V. IMcNutt and President Franklin D. Roosevelt and as receiver for the Indiana Railroad, managed the liquidation of Indiana's interurban lines when they were compelled to yield to busses and private automobiles. Setting up Legion national headquarters in Indianapolis was a major accomplishment of Elder. He < also was Legion national treasurer froin 1928 to 1933, treasurer of the Legion Publishing Corporation from 1928 to 1935 and headed the committee in charge In 1927 when 30,000 Legionnaires made a pilgrimage to France. (Elder was treasurer of the wellpublicized “Two Per Cent Club”, which collected campaign funds from state workers and others. Its official name was the Hoosier Democratic club. Elder was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania where he was a star athlete. Ho was a first lieutenant in World War I and was engaged in the real estate business, Survivors Ire the widow, Madeline; a daughter, Mrs. William E. Schermerhorn, of Hyde Park, N.Y., and a son, William L., of New Augusta. Opening New Area At Stratton Place Attention of Daily Democrat readers is called to. Congress Candidate Visits In Decatur Hortest, but simple, observations on the nation's problems were called for by Fred W. Greene. Fort Wayne attorney who is Democratic candidate for congress from this district Greene addressed Indiana’s Democratic congressional candidates at Indianapolis Wedneaday. Greene asked for candidates to stop confusing aid bothering the voters, and present the questions fairly.' l He also called for fair and honest treatment of the many women voters of Indiana. Greene emphasized the importance of the farmers and laborers’ wages as the headwaters of the national economy, and stated that an economic crash would result if farm prices and laboring dages fall. Greene, who won the Demo--cratic nomination by carrying Adams county and all rural counties of the fourth district, is a fre quent visitor in Decatur.

Last Os Theft Ring Taken In Custody INDIANAPOLIS, (INS) — Coy Linden Griffis, 2s. of Anderson, described as the last of a widespread Central Indiana thief ring, was held in Indianapolis today, on robbery charges. Police, who returned Griffis from New Castle to Indianapolis, said the Anderson man has confessed to three holdups In the Hoosier capital city. Four alleged partners already are serving prison sentences. Arrested On Charge Os Assault, Battery Florenz T. Leonard of North Second street, entered a plea this morning of not guilty to a charge of assault and battery filed by his wife in city court. The charge w»s made when Mrs. Leonard told police that as she and her two children were about to drive away from Leonard’s shop last night
