Wheat Crop Outlook Scheduled Thursday Basis For Benson's Control Decision ~ (INS) — The agriculture department will make ite first official forecast of the entire Utt’■wheat crop this week. This report—to be made public Thursday afternoon —also probably will be the basis for agriculture secretary Ezra Taft Befflson’s decision on wheat production controls for 1955. •Previously this year, the government estimated the winter wheat crop at 678 million bushels, but there has not yet been an official estimate of the spring wheat crop. Benson must announce by July 1 whether a national marketing quota will be established for 1955 wheat, although he has until July 15 to decide upon acreage allotments for next year’s crop. If farmers planted the spring wheat acreage that was indicated In their March 1 intentions —and if yields are average—the estimate of the spring wheat crop should be about 220 bushels. Farmers already have begun to harvest winter wheat in some southern sectors of the nation, but spring wheat will not be harvested until August or Septmeber. Agriculture department observers believe there would have to be revolutionary reductions in this year’s wheat crop to prevent the establishment of controls on the 1955 crop. According to law, controls must be put on wheat When total supply exceeds normal supply by 20 percent. Normal supply is considered to be total domestic and export disappearance, plus 15 percent. Thus, this year — with normal supply figured at slightly more thin pheTilllloh bushels —the level at which a jnarkeitng quota must be established is close to one trillion 250 million bushels. But with a total crop this yedk

of around 900 million •bushels and a caryover from 1953 and previous year® of approximately the same site, total *upp|y would hit one billion 800 million bushels. This would be more than 500 million bushel* above the cut-off point. In other words, the only way that production controls on the 1955 wheat crop can be avoided is tor this year’s crop to be cut drastically. To Resume Mining Operations Wednesday TERRE HAUTE, Ind., (INS) — Coal mining operations are to be resumed Wednesday at the Snow Hill mine near New Goshen, ending a three-Week stoppage caused by a disastrous fire.
