Ten members and officers of the federation wrote President Eisenhower Sunday that the security system which barred J. Robert Op : penheimer from the government's atomic secrets poses such a grave threat to scientific research that it could lead to “national suicide.” A similar warning was sounded by James R. Killian Jr., president of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in an address at the commencement exercises of the University of Notre Dame at South Bend, Ind., Sunday. He declared: "America cannot progress without great men and great minds working in an atmosphere of freedom — freedom of inquiry,, freedom from fear and freedom from Improper pressure.” Killian said that teachers, scientists and scholars should receive no special provileges but added that neither should they be given “special handicaps” for holding unusual or independent points of view.
