Thompson and Mays teamed up to pull the Giants into a virtual tie with Milwaukee for second place as they accounted for all Uie scoring in New York's 13-to-8 conquest of St. Louis Thursday night. Thompson, making his first official appearance since May 25. when he chipped a bone in <his knee cap, whipped the Cardinals practically single-handedly as he smashed three successive homeruns to fall one shy of -the major league record last equaled four years ago by Brooklyn’s Gil Hodges. He drew an intentional pass on his fourth trip to the plate and singled in another run for a total of eight RBl’s—largest individual production feat in the league this year.. <: Sparkplug Mays drove in the five other runs with‘hoi‘ners No. 15 and 16 that moved him into a tie. with Hank Sauer of Chicago for the league leadership. plate. .. Thompson opened with a two-run blast in the first oft Gerry Staley but the Cardinals answered with Stan Musial'a blow off Sal Maglie in their half. John McCall was summoned to quell a four-run uprising by the Cards in (i»t jext inning and Thompson put -the Giants into the ball game again in the third with a tbree-rtflß wallop off Staley, The Cards scored once more in the fourth and Thompson finally routed Staley with his third straight homer in the fifth, one which pulled the Plants into a 7-7 tie. Then Mays took over-for a clout in the seventh off Joe Presko. Al Dark, who collectgd .four hits, preceded Mays with a double and Thompson was walked. Willie capped the slugfest witlr his ninthinning homer off Al Brasle. Presko was on the mound When the tide turned and Marv Grissom chalked up the victory by holding the Cards to one run in the last six innings. The win. which broke a third-place deadlock with Philadelphia placed the Giants three percentage points out of second place and a game behind pacesetting Brooklyn. "~ The rest of the National League card was washed out—Brooklyn at Milwaukee. Pittsburgh at Chicago and Philadelphia at Cincinnati. , In the American League, Bob Lemon pitched a four-hitter for front-running Cleveland but the Indians bowed, 2 to 1. to the New York Yankees. The Chicago White Sox moved to within a game of Cleveland by topping Boston, 9 to 6. In a pair of night games, Philadelphia decfsioned Baltimore, 6 to 2, and Washington nosed out Detroit, 4 to 3. At Yankee Stadium, Joe Collins smashed an eighth-inning homer that broke a 1-1 deadlock and ‘tfis pitching duel between <Ed Lopat and Lemon. The Indians collected 11 hits but also rang up three' errors. The Yankee triumph evened the series. The Red Cox atacked winner Virgil Trucks and Don Johnson for 15 hits, including a home-run by Harry Agganis and a three-run homer iby Ted Williams. But the White Sox bunched their‘l3 hits effectively off four hurlers, including loser Skinny Brown. Jim Rivera paced the Chisox attack with two doubles and a single while Ted Lepcio hammered four safeties for Boston in the three hour, 17-minute marathon at FenWay Park. Mario scattered nine hits, one a home run by Bob Young, while going the route for the first time this year as the Athletics dumped the Orioles into the cellar and climbed into seventh place. Joe Demastri paced the A's 14hit attack against Don Lansen with three hits, one a homer. At Washington, winning pitcher Maury .McDermott scored the winning run in the sixth inning when he reached first on an error and advanced o a walk and Wayne Terwilliger’s single. All four Senator runs were unearned.
