I iTill" "i |H , ; v CBjCi A wj ■ ti£ssoflAsSM Creamed comments on the Sunday school lesson, Amos Condemns Social Injustice, Amos 7: 10-17; 3:4-8. for Sunday. June 6. Under Jeroboam IPs reign of 41 years, seeming prosperity had come to Israel but at the expense of social injustice la heavy taxes and oppression of the poor. God called Amos to prophesy and with courage he proceeded to announce the certain doom for such profligacy. oppression end injustices. V.lO. “Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent too Jeroboam, king of Israel, saying. Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words.” In the preceding chapters Amos told of God’s judgments upon the nations, God’s wrath against Israel and Judah, the necessity of God’s judgment sgalnst Isrsel. These reports esme to Amssish, the priest of idol worship st Bothel who undertook to defend the king; this prophet charged Amos with conspiracy against the king which would be of such a serious nature as to undo the seeming prosperity of Israel. 1 V.ll. “For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the a word and Israel shall surely be led aw*ay captive ° ut °f their own land.” Amos was misquoted—see verse 3. This misquoted statement would incite the king to act against Amos. False statement in self defense is common in corrupt government. V.ll. "Also Amaziah said to Amos, 0 thou seer, go, flee thee eway into the land of Judah, and there oat bread and prophesy.” The implication was that Amos was a traitor and that since Amaziah was prophesying for money, he ought to go to Judah where be got his pay. Another false charge. In the following verse Amaziah argupd that the king’s domain was i legally established and an out- , aider had nq claim on him. Sin ’ wants to*be let alone. , V. 14. “Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet neither was I a prophet’s son: but I was an herdman. and gatherer of sycomore fruit.” Amos had no professional ax to grind—pp vested interests to spoil his motives. He was a layman and an evangelist Members of the church ’ are under obligations as well as t the minister to proclaim righteousOur Preacher Says: To evaluate our American citizenship we need ever to remember the price paid for freedom, recalling all the sacrifices made from the beginning of our history. Gratitude belongs to our pioneers who by great sacrifice laid the cornerstone of our government. 1 There were many noble statesmen who kept the flame of freedom burning. We remember the thousands at loyal citizens who answered the call of their country in the Interests of freedom. It is fitting that we remember that true freedom was made possible by the atonement of Christ who died that all men might be free. > assembly OF GOD 316 S. 13th Street Don Rentschler, pastor Dale Smitley, S. nets. V. 15. “And the Lord took me aa I followed the flock, and the Lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel." Amos declared bis credentials were God given. There he could proceed In the name of the Lord. The courage we need is found in God's assurance of hia presence and power. V. 16. "Now therefore hear the word of the Lord; Thou sayest prophesy not against Israel and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac." Amos with courage repeated Amaziah’s words and in so doing he regarded the principle. “We ought to obey God rather than men." V. 17. “Therefore thus saith the Lord. Thy wife ehall be a harlot in the city, and' thy sons and daughters Shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of this land " Figurative language is here used. The explanation as to "harlot" is in Isaiah 13:16. In the day of captivity sons and daughters of Israel will be slain, the country will be taken over and Israel will be made to live in a gentile (polluted) land- Ths Assyrians will take captive Israel, there is to be no doubt about this. V. 4. “Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land fall.’’ Here are mingled injustice and doom. Their /selfish desires oppress the needy and the poor to the very limit. God would have his servants call sin, sin. V. 6. “Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the epha small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balance by deceit.” Evidently trade was suspended on the day of the new moon, which was observed as a holiday, so the impatients were glad when it was over. In making purchases the small epha (not a full measure) was used and in payment they cheated again by taking more silver than they should- Sin here is not dealt with in generalities. The outcome stated in the next verse is that the poor or their children will be slaves. Vi7. “The Lord hath sWorn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their work.” The implication is that judgment will come upon these avaricious men at any time. —Based on copyrighted outlines produced by the Division of Christian Education, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A., and used by permission.
