Knowland Says Congress Will Quit July 31 Democratic Leader In Senate Doubts July 31 Adjourning By UNITED PRESS Senate Republican leader William F. Knowland stood by his prediction today that congress can wind up its business and go home try July 31st — if the Democrats cooperate. He renewed his prediction after senate Democratic leader Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas gave It as his personal estimate that Aug. 15th is the earliest possible adjournment date. The two-week difference in the predictions of the party leaders is important to all members of the house and a third of the senators who must stand for reelection, in November. Johnson said he thought his prediction was — if anything — too optimistic. But Knowland — who has often stated that congress can make the July 31st adjournment date — said if "we receive a degree of cooperation on legislation yet to be acted on. I don’t see why we can’t meet it.” Knowland said congressional action oh appropriations bills have progressed farther at this stage than at any time of his nine years in the senate. He was also optimistic about getting the big tax reform bill out of the senate finance committee. Knowland and Johnson agreed that it is unlikely that congress will return to Washington after the elections in the fall —a plan that had been mentioned in some OOP quarters. Other congressional news: Doctor Draft: A house armed services subcommittee has approved a bill to allow the military to induct as enlisted men drafted physicians and dentists who do not meet security tests for commissions. Term Is Suspended For Drunken Driving Leo P. Seylors, 54, 602 West Washington Blvd., Fort Wayne was fined S2OO and costs and drew a 180-day suspended penal farm sentence in Fort Wayne city court Wednesday when he was found guilty of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor. The case resulted from a mishap in Fort Wayne last February 18. Saylors also drew a two-year suspension of his drivers license. Two Men Killed By Jel Fighter Crash One Indiana Man Is Victim Os Crash ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., UP “ Navy authorities today investigated the crash of a Banshee jet fighter plane which killed vfwo men, including one from Indiana, while landing at the naval air station at nearby Pomona, N. J. The dead were identified as seamon Leßoy Sparks, 23, Connersville, Ind., and Lt. Cmdr. Robert E. Carman, 32, Pleasantville, N. J., the pilot. Sparks was on the ground when the plane crashed Wednesday. . A navy public information officer said the plane may have brushed wings with another Jet in a series of close formation passes over the airstrip. Two persons were injured, one of them critically. They were taken to the Philadelphia naval hospital. Sparks and the Injured were taking films of a tight-flying formation for the Westinghouse Electric Corp., manufacturers of the Banshee jet engine. They were hit by debris which flew over a wide area after the. plane crashed and exploded. Sparks is survived by his father, Lee Sparks, and his mother, Mrs. Arkie Browning, of Laurel, Ind. Submarines have wooden bearings- on the propeller shafts. The hard tropical Wood —lignum vitae —is widely used because there is no way of lubricating the submerged bearings except from the water itself.
