The governor has hunted several months Ydr a#uccSbso+ to Albert Wedekfng, Dale, as highway chairman since Wedeklng took a second job as director of the Indiana toll road commission. William Sayer, Craig’s administrative assistant, said he expected Craig to appoint the successor before leaving for French Lick. Law provides that highway commissioners come from each section of the state. Wedeking was from the south, and it was speculated Godwin, who now is personnel director for the highway department, would replace him. It was further speculated Craig will announce that lEesex has resigned and appoint Moore, who is from Lafayette, to ■ succeed him. That would leave Deane E. Walker, Indianapolis, on the commission. On the Holder matter, it was reported Craig received telephoned assurance from the White House and Atty. Gn. Herbert Brownell that Holder will not be appointed to one of two new federal judge ships. Sens. William Jenner and Homer Capehart reportedly favor Holder. Sayer could not Confirm this. "I know he (Cfaig) had a call to Washington, but I don’t know who he talked to Or what he talked about,” Sayer said. In Washington. White House press secretary James C. Hagerty said “1 don’t know anything about It,” ANGRY WRANGLE (Con tinned Fron Page One) 13, Cohn said, Adams and Stevens questioned whether the hearings had to be held and asked “whether thgre was some way of . . . letting the army do the job.” Special counsel Ray H. Jenkins asked if Stevens or Adams mentioned unfair or distorted newspaper stories about the inquiry. “They did not,” Cohn said. Cohn also said Stevens and Adams were present at some of the press briefings and “I can recall not statement of protest from either of them.” Jenkins asked if Cohn ever gave “distorted briefings to the press.” “1 don’t think so, sir,” Cohn replied. ’ PLAN CAREFUL (Continued From Page One) Bidault was reported to have told the French government that either a cease-fire will come out of the present negotiations or all hope for ending the 7-year-old war will be lost. Survivors Os Sea Disaster Relate Rescue Half-Nqked Sailors Battled Flames To QUONSET POINT, «. I. UP — Survivors of the Bennington disaster told today how half-naked -sailors battled through the flaming interior of the warship to rescue 1 their trapped shipmates. Screams echoed through companionways as heroic rescue workers fought to clear twisted steel that blocked compartment hatches. They reached some of the trapped men in time. For others, they ■were too late. ILL (j.g.) John S. Wollam-of Pittsburgh was one of those who was blasted out of his bunk by the first explosion. Thick, black smoke started to pour into his cabin. The lights went out, and Wollam found himself groping through a passageway. I*l thought my .roomate waa following me,” he said, “but I guess he didn’t make it.” “I was still dressed in my skin. I don’t know why I” didn't get burned except on my face.” Wollam borrowed a pair of trousers, grabbed a breathing mask and went forward to join the rescue parties. "The bulkheads were bent and , twisted, hammered in," he said. "Debris was everywhere. 1 began looking for people. I tried to go down a forward hatch. 1 started to ' pick up a man at the bottom but he was dead. His skin was shred- ’ ded off him like a peach.” . Rogers Anthony, an 18-year-old steward’s mate from Albany, Ga„ was the only one of 17 men to escape from one campartment. i "The hatches were closed and i we couldn’t get out,” he said. “There was lots of smoke and it got so bad that we all were screaming. I passed out a few Minutes later. I came to and heard someone trying to open the hatch and then I passed out again.” •>- It was the second time electrician’s mate 2/C Joe Blamick of McKeesport, Pa., escaped death on the Bennington" A member of its drew since 1952. Blamick was on board last year when a boiler explosion .killed 11 persons on a shakedown cruise off Cuba. Trapped in the central switchboard compartment Wednesday,-h* crawled t» a damage control point and helped the officer in charge make emergency calls. Flames shooting down a hatchway burneddiis neck and hand and he was overcome by smoke before being rescued. "1 sure was glad they got me' out of that hole,’ he said. Electrician’s mate 2/C James J, Wynne of Queens. N.Y’., said the trapped men had to breathe through 'Wet rags to keep alive. Jack C. Douglass. Gainesville, Tex., was blown down a ladder But escaped under his own power. “It was the worst thing f was ever in,” he said. “1 feel lucky to be alive."
