Brazilian Aviation Is Moving Ahead Purchase Os Jets Aiding Aviation RIO DE JANEIRO UP — The scream of modern jet planes over this carnival city are drowning out the familiar oarioca street song as Brazil throws her vast resources into the development of the greatest military and commercial air fleet in South America. The efforts of national and foreign airline companies have placed Brazilian aviation in an enviable position, second in regular airline mileage only to the United States. The nation’s air force, fast converting to complete jet operation, surpasses any other in Latin America. Fifty - four British - made, twin-engine jet fighters lead scores of propeller-driven planes and helicopters. More jets, including 50 trainers, are on the way. The rapid development of interior air routes is of tremendous importance in this immense country. Pan American Airways, which aided in the pioneering of Brazilian aviation and is the largest air carrier of Americans to Brazil, rates commercial aviation as “the nation's fastest growing industry.” Service To Interior The airports in downtown Rio and Sao Paulo handle more aircraft on regular schedules per day than the busiest European routes, including that between London and Paris. Traffic on the Rio-Sao Paulo run compares with that between New York and Washington or Chicago, and Brazilians boast that on holidays it is the most heavily traveled air route in the world.' Air travel has been the logical means to connect remote areas with key cities in a natioh plagued by a lack of modern highways and adequate railroad facilities. In’ the steaming interior and on the frontiers of Brazil, DC-3 and C-46 flights by Brazilian airlines provide the only fast method of obtaining news, relief supplies, medicine, technical experts and

manpower. And it is upon the airplane that the future of the interior, one of the richest areas of the world, depends. A spectacular recent commercial development is the opening of the trans-Ajnazon flyway via Manaus over thousands of miles of "Green Hell’,’ jungle to link the Caribbean Sea directly to Rio. Air Rally Scheduled In 1930, only a score of Brazilian towns were served by air. But today more than 300 Cities, towns and villages are connected by air routes, and there are 1,269 operaV ing airports. Latest government figures show that in 1952, a total of 60,377,771 miles were flown in Brazil by 11 national and 11 foreign airlines. Their loads included 2.214,707 passengers and 108,047,634 pounds of cargo.' The Jet age also is expected to give Brazil a further boost in its position as South America’s commercial aviation leader. Panair do Brasil, largest domestic carrier on the continent, is planning to start 10-hour jet airliner flights to European capitals this autumn. These planes also are being purchased from Great Britain where Brazilian commercial pilots are now being trained. Brazil —which contends ita air pioneer, Alberto Santos Dumont, and not the Wright brothers, was the “Father of Aviation" — has scheduled a huge air rally to be held in Sao Paulo in June, Air enthusiasts and professionals from the United States and the Latin American republics will bring some 2.000 planes for the largest such get-together in history—and Brazil fully expects to steal the limelight from the best of the vis-, iting “hot-props.” Ducky Situation NEW LONDON. Conn., UP — Mrs and Mrs. Neil Morrison say their five-year-old pet, a duck named Jerry, keeps dogs out of the yard, knocks on doors and accompanies Mrs. Morrison shopping. Jerry also keeps the garden clean —of flowers. He eats them. Members of the U. S. Army First Corps contributed more than 3385,000 to Korean charities during the past year.
Newest U. S. City Has No Worries Lakewood, Calif. Reports No Worry LAKEWOOD. Calif., UP —They claim this is the nation’s newest city. It's a fast-moving place, all right. Farmers were tryipg to keep chickens out of beat) patches here 10 years ago. In those days you could get an unobstructed view of about 10 miles. Maybe a couple of citrus groves and an occasional home got In the way, but you could see a long way. Lakewood was nothing. Not so today. There are more than 65,000 people, and if Lakewood isn’t the newest city —two months old —it's probably the most unusual you ever saw. No slums. No Skid Row. No local police force. Not even a street out of repair in its seven square miles. In fact, the place has only one full-time paid employe — a city clerk. Lake wood operates on a novel county-contract form of government which does away with city employes. It contracts from Los Angeles County for police and fire protection and public utilities maintenance —even hires the county to collect and assess its taxes. Surplus Expected There’s sound reasoning behind this contract business. The fiveman city council (non-ealaried) pointed that out. Lakewood, located between Los Angeles and Long Beach, cotjld never begin to duplicate the services and fine facilities the county furnishes. It can hire these services much cheaper. This also eliminates a lot of bookwork. Lakewood has a nice Income. The tax on assessed valuation here is small, but there’s a good rebate from the state on gasoline, auto licenses, Iqiuor and sundry other taxes. The city fathers figure to have a yearly surplus of some 8240.000. Becoming a city was no overnight venture for Lakewood. There was a lengthy battle against threatened annexation by near-
by Long Beach. After much heated campaigning, the issue was put to a vote. Incorporation won out Lakewood ia young, ambitious. The average home owner is 32. The average family numbers 4.2. Most of the men in this almost entirely residential city are employes of nearby* aircraft and petroleum industries.
