Braves' Rookie Hands Dodgers First Shutout By UNITED PRESS Lean Gene Conley tossed a few fast curves today into the baseball gossip that he was just another minor league marvel who couldn’t quite make it in the majors. Stringbean Gene, the 6-foot, 8inch rookie right hander of the Milwaukee Braves is the only player In professional baseball history ever to be named twice as minor league “player of the year,” but after two previous unsuccessful trials with the Braves, there seemed to be doubts as to his major league potential. Tuesday night, with the poise of a veteran, he turned in the first shutout over the Dodgers since July 11 of last season, beating them 2-J> and striking out seven while walking none. It was his second straight route-going triumph and he was at his best with men on bases, striking out Gil Hodges with two on and Duke Snider with one on in troublesome situations. , Conley had to be superb because until Joe Adcock homered in the sixth it was a scoreless battle. In the seventh the Braves scored again when Ed Mathews doubled Home Danny O’Connell from first on a clout that even had the umpires arguing. it was ruled a double, then a homer, then a double, and there was further dispute over whether O’Connell should have scored, and whether Mathews was out for going on past second into a Pee Wee Reese tag. It was ruled he did so after time was called. Phils Beat Cubs In other National League gamete, the Phils defeated the Cubs 8-7 in the 10th on a single by Del Ennis after Richie Ashburn walked and moved up on a wild pitch, while the Giants came from behind to top Cincinnati. 5-4, and the Pirates and Cards were rained out at Pittsburgh. Bob Keegan made it four victories for Chicago when he sixhitted the Red Sox, 2-1, and started off the winning rally with a triple, while Yogi Berra clouted a tworun double in the ninth as the Y’ankees edged Cleveland 5-3. Joe Coleman pitched a two-hit 2-0 shutout for Baltimore over Philadelphia and Bob Porterfield pitched a four-hitter and hit a ninth innipg homer in Washington’s 5-3. Win at betfolt in the American league. Ennis drove in four runs in the Philly triumph, which was achieved after the Cubs had gone in front with a four-run seventh inning rally. Ralph Kiner had four Chicago hits. Monte Irvin tripled home the winning run for the Giants in the eighth after Willie Mays and Whitey Lockman hit earlier homers. Ted Kluszewski hit his 10th homer for Cincy, tying him for the major league lead. Keegan tripled and scored the winning run for Chicago on a single by Nellie Fox, moving the White Sox back into second place ahead of Cleveland. Novice Rosen . First bgseman Al Rosen, a novice at the job, set up New York's winning hit by Berra when with a runner on first, he stajted after Hank Bauer's grdunder then decided to let Bobby Avila field it. Then Avila had no one' to throw to at first and it went foi; a Wygle. Rosen previously bad Vied the score at 3-3 off winning pitcher Allie Reynolds with a two-run single. Coleman permitted only one man to reach third as Sam Mele was the key hitter for Baltimore. Mele tripled find scored on a fly by Vic Wertz for the first run. then singled, took second on a passed ball and scored on Vein Stephens double -for the other. .Porterfield, achieving his third victory. was touched tor a home run by Frank House. but struck out four. Ed Yost also homered for Washington. Tuesday's Star: Gene Conley of the Braves, who shut out the Dodgers. 2-0, for the first time since last July 11. striking out seven ami walking none in a neat eighthitter. Regionals In State May See Five New Marks INDIANAPOLIS UP — If the weatherman’s prediction for mild weather holds, five of the 13 regional records have an excellent chance of being re-written in Friday’s second leg of the Indiana high school track and field championship. Warm weather and suitable cinder paths hold the key, of course, and any record-busting would be a turn about from last weekend when all-time sectional marks stood up during rain and cold weather. But the weather began to perk up Tuesday and forecasters said the warm trend would continue throughout the week. In that case, the best bets for new regional marks were in the 100-yard dash, 220, high and low hurdles, and pole vault. There also was a slim chance for new standards in the 880, mile, and broad jump, but records in the 440, high jump, shotput end both relays should lie safe. Here are the all-time regional records: 100-yard dash — Joe Gonzales,
