Admits Continued Beating Os Child 9-Yeor-Old Girl K. Deformed By Blows NORWALK, Calif. VP -Doctors fought today to restore the deformed body of g-year-old Cells Banshee who said she still loved her mother despite llrmonths of torture In which the mother: Twisted her arms until they broke "with * crunching noise." Struck her »o hard in the face she was blinded in one eye. Beat her back into a mass of welts with a rubber hose. Knocked out six of the girl’s upper teeth. Bquaeaed her bands until the bones broke. Smashed the girl’s nose by breaking it several times with the hose and her fists. Sheriffs deputies, acting on a tip, seised Mrs. Trinidad Vera, 28, and found Celia cowering behind a pile of dirty clothes in Mrs. Vera's borne. Mrs. Vera has seven children, including Celia, and is expecting her eighth. Celia broke into tears when the officers said they were taking her from her mother. "1 love my mother,” she sobbed. Deputies said Vara admitted that she savagely and systematically beat the girl during the past 18 months. Mrs. Vera was arrested after a neighbor reported that Celia was slowly being beaten to death. She was booked on a charge of child beating which carries a maximum - sentence of two years Imprisoh- - ment. Juvenile Sgt. Ed. Flouton said Mrs. Vera bad kept the girl out of school since the first grade because she "didn’t want anyone to know about the beatings.” He said Celia was trained to hide in a closet whenever strangers came to the house and had been “well coached” to explain the injuries by saying, "I fell off my tricycle,” or “I tumbled end fell down.” The frightened little girl whimpered as she attempted to run crocked fingers over her swollen nose by lowering her head t,e her hands. Her shoulders were frozen into immobility by untreated injuries, and her arms extend grotesquely because of apparent breaks that healed without medical tion"I used to be able to see out of both eyes,” said the little victim as physicians examined her use* less eye. Detectives said the. father of. Cells and U-year-old sister died several years ago and that Mrs. Vera has had five children by her present husband, Joe Cruz Vera, 42, a construction laborer. Investigators said Mrs, Vera apparently had not mistreated any of the other children.
