INDOCHINA WAR (Continued From I’aae Onel rice-rich 'Red River delta, keystone of France’s position in Indochina, had become ‘‘extremely serious.” .Communist forces estimated at 100,4)00 in the delta area had carried out so many attacks on vital road and rail connections between Hanoi and the supply port of Haiphong that a military airlift “has become almost indispensable.” The situation at Dien Bien Phu was reported as “very grave.” Tanks sent out to repulse the rebels bogged dbwn in the sticky, yellow-mud, and French infantrymen had to charge from point to point on the northern end of the lines to fight bayonet battles with the Reds. The French held only half of what used to be Dien Bien Phu’s main airstrip and the Reds Exerted increasing pressure against the French trenches blocking the rest of the way. Communist Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap was striving to reduce Frenchheld territory to so small an a#ea that the French will not be able to drop paratroopers rushed to Indochina from Paris by American planes. But the high command said some reinforcements had been dropped to the fortress through heavy fire Friday night. It was not known whether newly • arrived French commandos were among them.
