I Comments O" 8-8-hWeI tLesßMAgga| Creamed comments on the Sunday school ieeeon, Judgment of Jeroboam, I Kings 14:6-10; 14-12-16, for Sunday, May 2. The books of Kings show us how God deals with men in history, All authority, all responsibility, is a trust from God, and its use apart from God brings down divine judgment. The Godselected Jeroboam as king over the ten tribes became selfish and jealous, thus forgetting Ged, and so developed his own program with idol worship in which he caused Israel to sin against God. He by guile would send bis wife to use the prophet Ahijah as a fortune teller, desiring to know the outcome of his son’s illness. VA. “And the Lord said unto Abljah, Behold the wife of Jeroboam cometh to seek a thing of thee for her son; thus and thus shalt thou say unto her; for it shall be when she cometh In. she shall feign herself to be another woman.” God could not tolerate sin. hence the divine guidance of the prophet Disguise and deceit will sooner or later be revealedMaterial considerations were uppermost in the mind of Jeroboam who had forgotten God and caused Israel to forget him in spite of a former warning to the contrary. V. 6. “And it was so when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet, as she came in at the door, he said. Come in, thou wife of Jeroboam; why feignest thou thyself to be another? for I am sent to thee with heavy tidings.” The prophet being blind knew her footsteps and as God's man suggested he was about to declare God’s judgment. This was a surprise to the woman. V.7. “Go tell Jeroboam, thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel; Forasmuch as I exalted thee from among the people and made thee prince over my people Israel, and rent the kingdom from the house of David, and gave it thee; and yet thou hast not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with bis heart, to do only that which was right in mine eyes." Note that God still maintains a claim on this sinning people since he calls them "my. people.” All men are in a sense.children of God, but many of them are lost children. A man CLERICUS SAYS: Clericus says: "The man who walks in faith knows that his tomorrow is in God's hands, and he turns to God, not to gain forbidden knowledge, but to receive strength for today. By meeting each day with God. he finds his tomorrows more deeply blessed by Him.” Lesson Prayer: Lesson prayer: Grant that we may never misuse pur responsibility and freedom in tolerating any thought, plan, or deed that is questionable. Grant that we may watch the first and slightest appearance of evil and turn from it at once. We are grateful for the strength and courage that come when one will take a stand positively and steadfastly for the right. Book Review Lenten Sermon Outlines, by 'R. E. Golladay, D.D., Angsburg Pubishing House, is an encyclopedia well organised and inspirational for the minister’s use. The analy-

who puts his own works and person above the providential workings of almighty God, is marked as a fallen believer. V. 9. “But hast done evil above all that was before thee; for thou hast gone and made thee other Gods, and molten images, to provoke me to anger, and hast cast me behind thy back.” There had been idol worship before, but in this case the idols were made by the king, a very daring thing to do. In this, Jeroboam turned his back to God, a very sullen act The greater the responsibility, the greater the offense to God in our sinning. Diverted authority and responsibility bring forth God's judgment. See the next verse. V. 13. "And all Israel shall mourn for him, and bury him; for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave, because in him is found some good thing toward the Lord God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam." In the death of the son was given a sure sign of later judgment; but the son who in his youth pleased God was to have an honorable funeral. A Christian funeral has great significance. V. 14. “Moreover the Lord shall raise him up a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day; but what? oven now.” The king who overthrew the house of Jeroboam was Baasha; he also did evil in the sight of the Lord. 1 V. 15. “For the Lord shall smite Israel as a reed is shaken in the water, and he shall root up all Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers, and shall scatter them beyond the river because they have made their graves, provoking the Lord to anger." The Euphrates river is meant. This prediction reached far into the future and was fulfilled after the city of Samaria fell in 722 B.C. Here is portrayed a sure judgment on all peoples who forget God. V. 16. "And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam who did sin and made Israel to sin.” A nation does not necessarily sin because its ruler sins, for individual freedom is to be respected. People of most nations are responsible as well as those in authority, especially is this true where democracy is the form of government. The right of franchise is a sacred right which marks a loyal citizen Who will exercise his voting privilege. —Based on copyrighted outlines ' produced by the division of Christian education.
