He stressed, however, that if our foreign ■policy should fall to prevent the fall of Indochina, “it may mean the fall of the rest of Asia which would lead to World War III.” The vice president referred only briefly to the stormy Washington hearings between Sen. Joseph (McCarthy and the Army, saying they have created “a great deal of sensation.” “The charges and’ counter chargee flying back., and forth should not obscure a- solid sact — that this administration has don and is doing devastatingly effective job of destroying the Communist conspiracy in the United States,” he said. French Newlyweds On Adventure Across U. S.
NEW YORK UP — A French bride and groom with |3OO, a few words of English and a motor scooter built for two, set out for California today to find out if it's true that all Americans aren't alike. Antoine Baud, 29, runs a Paris restaurant with his father and brother. Denise Baud, 20, was a secretary in a Paris jewelry firm until she was married early this month to the man she met when her sister married his brother. "We have met Americans in Paris,” said Denise, who owns the. family’s bit of English. “We want to know them. We think in Europe all Americans seem the same. Somebody told us in the different states people are different and even speak with different accents.” The tiny brunette bride and her groom, scarcely taller than she, started planning the trip shortly after they became engaged, in January. ' The thing they most want to see, said Denise, is “Le California — San Francisco — we hear about it —we want to see it all." Antoine, she said, insisted on Chicago, too, “because of the Father Deferment Rules Clarified Selective Service In Announcement . A- Col. Frank R. Kossa, Indiana selective service director, has announced that some fathers are eligible to be deferred in class UJ-A while others do not qualify for the deferment. This happens because the draft regulations were amended last July to establish August 25, 1953, as the deadline for presenting evidence to a draft board of a child In being or a medical certificate attesting the wife's pregnancy. ' This deadline was announced 45 days before it became effective and was widely pubftcited so that all selective service registrants were fore warped, The draft; boards may not accept evidence of fatherhood presented after August 24, 1953, and they may not use their owtr discretion in making interpretations of thdi rule. The only quesdence was filed. . IRukei::Elective -service regwlatins thb term “child" includes a' legitimate or illegitimate child from the date of its conception, a child legally a stepchild, a foster child, and a person who is supported in good faith by,the registrant in,a relationship similar to that of parent and child but shall not Include any person 18 years of age or over unless he is physically or mentally handicapped. CL Kossa also emphasized that a father may not be deferred because of a child or children-, although he submitted evidence of fatherhood on or before last August 25, unless he is actually living with the child or children in a home. If he becomes separated or divorced and no longer lives with the children, be is not then eligible to be deferred as a father. X ■ t ■ ~ Youth Convicted Os Refusing Induction Fort Wayne Youth Is Convicted Thursday Irwin Hagy, 22, Fort Wayne, was convicted Thursday on a federal . charge of refusing induction into the army. Hagy, described as an “outstanding cadet' in his college ROTC class, said he should have been classed as a conscientious objector because he was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses religious sect and opposed war. Hagy claimed his Allen county draft board showed bias against the Witnesses in denying him CO status. Asst. U. S. Atty. Stephen Leonard said Hagy explained his enrollment in the ROTC course as being a “requirement,” and regarded it as an "academic” subject. Steckler delayed sentencing Hagy. Federal Judge William E. Steckler will hear a similar case today when Vaughn Peebles, Wabash county farm youth, goes on trial. Delays in drafting him and John V. Beamer, Jr., son of the fifth district congressman, were cited* as reasons for a mass resignation of the Wabash county draft board i last year.
