Winter Wheal Crop Estimate Lowered
May Halt Buildup In Wheat Surplus WASHINGTON UP — Undersecretary of Agriculture True D. <Morse said today that parched soil and smothering dust may halt an anticipated buildup of. wheat surpluses. Morse said it was too early to tell if this year’s wheat crop win be short enough to remove some of the previous years' surplus stocks from storage. But he said a department report dropping, this year’s anticipated yield by 72 million bushels indicates there will <be no addition to the surplus holdings if crop and demand condtions remain unchanged. He added that unusually low sub - sol moisture conditions in some corn belt areas are being watched closely. It these “usually reliable” areas don't get some rain, he said, corn and soybean crops may be cut also. ■Friday’s crop report showed "sharp deterioration” in winter wheat prospects in the western and southern great plains. Wheat in fields which have had less than half of normal rainfall the past several months and which have taken already a four-year drought beating is “barely holding oh or dying slowly from drought,” the report said. .The crop reporting hoard estimated the 1954 winter wheat crop would total 677,981,000 bushels, down 23 per cent from last year and 19 per cent below normal. Except for the flood-damaged 1951 crop of 645 million bushels, it wuold be the smallest since 1941. The board anticipated some drought losses in winter wheat last December when it forecast a 750,140,000 bushel crop this year. But it said Friday losses exceeded expectations and offset improved prospects m other areas. Crop prospects in Kansas, the leading winter wheat state, dropped 29 million bushels front December to total 146.745,000 bushels. Texas prospects dropped 30,751,000 bushels and the state’s prospective 21,290,000 busheLcrap would be less than half of the 10 year average. Artificial "mountains” for the convenience of skiers are being created in Berlin from the piles of rubble cleared from the damaged city. Some 12,000,000 meters of rubble are used to form a skijump of 330 feet.

Drug Rackets Head Seriously Wounded Brother Killed In ‘ Shooting At Chicago CHICAGO (UP) — The alleged kingpin of a 10-milllon-dollar-year narcotics racket was seriously wounded and his brother was shot to death moments before their car smashed into the side of a building today. The driver of the car, James Pape, 36, was killed by bullet® in the back of his head and neck. His brother, Anthony (Andy) Pape, 40, slumped beside him riddled by eight bullets. William Touhy, chief of detectives, said the brothers had apparently been shot from behind by two men in the back seat who leaped out of the car before it crashed. Police theorized the snootings resulted from an attempt to take over the lush heroin racket which Andy Pape is believed to control. It also was believed Andy Pape, father of a 3-week-old baby, may have been attacked because his gangland associats feared he would attempt to make a “deal" y;ith federal agents closing in on the racket. Albert Aman, head of the federal narcotics bureau here, said the “organization" is believed to be the chief supplier of narcotics to the peddlers who sell to Chicago drug addicts. Andy Pape and six other men were arrested March 16 in a series of raids by federal agents and local police. Federal agents said they -had spent six months in undercover work leading up to the raids and predicted panic among -drug addicts when the supply provided by the ring ran out. Pape, who has a record of 22 arrests, was free on bond when he and his brother were shot down. He was rushed to Garfield park hospital, where a priest was summoned to administer the last rites of the Roman Catholic church. Police said he gave responses to the priest’s prayers and. the next moment, snapped a refusal to identify who had shot him. Doctors said his condition was critical. The wife of James Pape, a waitress, told police her husband telephoned Friday night he would not pick her up from work'because “he had something to do.” Officers believed this meant James planned

S, post office, was ah innocent victim of an attack, aimed at his brother. Andy Pape’s wife, Adeline, said the brothers spent the evening; together at Andy’s apartment watching television. They left about lip. m. to ‘‘get a paper.” Officers believed the killers were either hiding in James’ car when, the brothers entered it or the Papes picked them up later.
