O’Brien today said barricades were being erected around five state prison farms to prevent inmates from slipping away for drinking parties and dates. O’Brien said authorities learned some inmatM had been able to (get away night, at times stealing prison trucks, for drinking parties and dates in Chicago and other nearby communities. He said the excursions were discovered when one inmate, Virgil | Ross, 40, sentenced from Marion county, failed ter return after a ’ I night in Chicago. It also was learnI ed that some hogs had been stolen ■ from one of the farms. “We started an investigation (and found inmates were not kept, ■ under close security at the farm,” , O'Brien said. One guard was fired, he said, and plans were made immediately to take stronger.security measures. Ross later was arrested at Fort I Wayne and told authorities he was ! able to get away jfehts while at ,! the farm „to ‘‘keep company with ' a nurse in Chicago.” Warden J. ‘Ellis Overlade said i further investigation revealed that on at least one occasion several inmates took a prison track to a nearby city for a drinking party. Tire —farms, housing '4O-60 prisoners each, are located up to; eight miles from tile Mrctßgan’City i prison. “We have increased the guard force at night, putting on additional patrol officers,” O’Brien
