Doubts House Will Vole For Statehood Bill Senate Passes Bill For Admitting Both Alaska And Hawaii WASHINGTON UP — Speaker Joseph W. Martin Jr. said today he sees little chance of house approval of the senate-passed AlaskaHawaii statehood bill. the house previously has approved statehood for Hawaii, but it has hot acted oti' statehood for Alasit. ~ "1 dbn't see much hope for the bill td pass the hohse,” Mtrttn told newsmen. “Because of Alaska?” a reporter asked. "Yes,” the speaker replied. “We think the two should be considered separately.” Asked whether he thought President Eisenhower would be willing tb support statehood tot* Alaska, Martin Said he doesn’t bfejieve the President has changed his mind. The senate rejected the President's recOrtirilendatibn that statehood for Hawaii and Alaska be divided into separate measures. Hawaii is normally considered Republican, while Alaska is regarded 1 as Democratic. House RepU bll can leader Charles A. Halleck (Ind) charged that the'senate “played fast and loose” in tietng Alaska statehood to the house-apprbved Hawaii bill. Halleck, personally opposed to the combined bill, said Hawaiian partisans who voted to include Alaska “may beat the blame for sabotaging" Hawaii's chances. Another house leader, commenting on the senate vote, said “They know we’ll kill it Over here.” Statehood supporters wfefe happy over the 57-28 vote by which the senate approved the combined bill Thursday.
