tered just before the Geneva peace conference. There were reports a group of 25 826 bombers gjready had been ordered sent to Indochina. But a Pentagon spokesman said there had been no final decision and the plan is still in the discussion stage. The move to get planes dis-'< patched to the war theater came as Radford and other U. S. leaders were deep in strategy discussions with Gen. Paul Ely, chief of staff of the French armed forces - who has just been to Indochina. Ely had a date to confer with secretary of state John Foster Dulles today. Later meetings were 'scheduled with the joint chiefs. Planes to deal with the current heavy Communist attack seem to be the most immediate requirement of the French. But in the i opinion of U.S. officials a more serious problem is the need for aj stronger native army to carry the burden of the fight and to build a broader base for what many Asians call a colonial war.
Fascist-Led Riot Is Crushed In Rome *2,000 Students Are Dispersed By Police 'ROME UP — Premier Mario Scelba's armed police crushed a Fascist-led demonstration in Rome today before it could mushroom into new rioting over Trieste. Police herded 30 youths into vans and dispersed 2,000 other students. None was injured. More than 1,000 armed riot police, an organization created by Scelba, teamed with federal police to prevent the students' attempt to march toward foreign embassies, including that of the United States. Students shouting “Trieste is ours," “Down with Tito” brought back memories of last Novemjber’s demonstration, but swiftmoving police prevented things from getting out of hand. The demonstrations tied up traffic in central Rome but otherwise failed to ripple the normal life of the capital. - . The students belatedly were marking the sixth anniversary of the unfulfilled promise by the United States, Britain and France to give al lot Triestes free territory to Italy. Discuss Problems Os New Ditch Law Conference Held At Court House Today Gene Beard of South Whitley, a member of the state board of accounts, met today with several county officials to discuss the problems which are resulting from the new ditch law. Conferring with Beard were Lewis Worth man, president of the county commissioners; Davie Macklin,, county attorney: Herman Mqellering, county surveyor: Frank kitson, county auditor, and George Gable, a member of the state tax board. The main problem is setting up new bookkeeping forms for the collection of ditch funds. The new law requires more highly detailed reports on each ditch than was formerly necessary. This problem is common to Jay, Wells, Whitley, Allen and Adams counties where as many ditches are found as in the remaining counties of the entire state. ....... Nothing definite could be resolved at today’s meeting. After further information is obtained from Indianapolis, another meeting will be called in a few days.

North-South Toll Road Recommended Gov. Craig Favors North-South Route BLOOMINGTON. Ind. UP — Governor Craig has recommended construction of a north-south toll road and steps to retrieve markets for Indiana’s coal industry. Speaking at the opening of a two-day industrial development conference Monday at Indiana University, the governor said directional activities are becoming more north-south than eastwest. The proposed north-south toll road wopld boost Indiana as a production center and link "the great self-sufficient middle west and the independent south,” Craig said. -- He pointed to a steady decline in state coal industries and advocated methods to increase coal production and use. Arthur M. Weimer, of the I.U. school of business; predicted the recent trend toward industrial expansion in urban areas will continue. “Suburban locations have become favorable because of the efficiency of 1-story plants which, often make possible a savings of as much as 25 per cent in production costs,” he said. , - It can cost you three cents or more in gas and wear-and tear every time you stop your car and wait for a traffic light to change. z , Saturday is the niost dangerous day of the week to drive your car. according to the National Safety Council. Spurn GOP's Proposal On Sen. Chavez Democrats Spurn Republican Move On Ousting Senator WASHINGTON, (UP)' — Democrat/ today spurned a Republican compromise amendment designed to soften the GOP effort to oust Dennis Chavez as senator from New Mexico. The Democrats held out for total victory—adoption of a resolution declaring that Democrat Chavez legally won reelection over Republican Patrick J. Hurley in the contested 1952 senatorial race. And they appeared to have the votes to turn the trick. There was a chance the issue would be settled late today, after two days of debate. Democrats were reported united solidly behind Chavez and counting on picking up support from some Republicans and probably independent Sen. Wayne Morse, Ore. Chavez jauntily told newsmen “I’m not worried. I’m ready for a vote, and the sooner the better.” Besides solid Democratic backing, Chavez said, he expects "some help from the Republican side.” The long-awaited debate on the New Mexico contest opened Monday. Sen. Frank A. Barrett, itWyo., chairman of a special rules subcommittee which investigated the dispute, said the election was “so permeated with fraud” it was impossible to tell whether Chavez or Hurley actually won. Barrett and Sen. Charles E. Potter, R-Mich., the other Republican subcommittee member, recommended a finding of “no election” —which would oust Chavez but would not seat Hurley. It would, instead, allow the seat to be filled by appointment of Gov. Edwin Mechem. a Republican, until November when a special election would be held to choose a successor. However, Sen. Guy Cordon, ROre.. introduced a surprise amendment that would soften the situation somewhat for Democrats, although they showed no inclination even to consider it. Cordon proposed that, if Chavez is ousted, the senate accept no replacement who was not elected by the voters of New Mexico. Cordon noted Mechem won the governorship in the same election where Chavez defeated Hurley for the senate by about 5.000 votes. Mechem’s election was not challenged and would be, at any rate, outside senate jurisdiction, but Cordon said he thought it would be proper to deny Mechem the privilege of appointing a senator.
